Hi Reefers :)

I have called desperately in love with an Australian Stripey- I think it is a gorgeous fish that would make a great addition to my little community.

Q: What should I do?
A: Forget about it, it is just a fling
B: Go for it! It's a match made in heaven

The tank in question is a FOWLR (... for now!) measuring 5' x 2' x 2' (Cade S2 1500) with below tank mates (its a lot, I know!)

2 x Common Clown Fish
1 x Timor Wrasse
1 x Blue-Sided Fairy Wrasse
1 x Lawnmower Blennie
1 x Bi-Colour Blennie
1 x One-Spot Foxface Rabbit Fish
1 x Pink Spotted Watchman Goby
1 x Purple Fire Fish
1 x Long Nose Hawk Fish
1 x Royal Gramma
1 x Bengali Cardinal Fish
1 x Coral Beauty
1 x Cherub Angel Fish
5 x Lyretail Anthias'
1 x Yellow Tail Purple Tang
1 x Tomini Tang
1 x Blue Regal Tang

They are quite nice and peaceful, just not fleshy lps safe at all, mine destroyed my Micromussa. Will also eat aiptasia, nice fish for a fowlr, or possibly sps only reef
That's uplifting to know, just gotta convince the missus she can't have any LPS in there :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes: She's all about the movement..

Cheers!

honestly if you want LPS, ignore it. These are peaceful but not with coral as they devour it. In a 5’ tank I’d also be cautious about the size they get (9” and incredibly active).

Thanks, I appreciate your advice as always! :)

Go for it, I added 8 to 6 systems that were over grown with aiptasia, and within 2 weeks there is no visible aiptasia in any of our systems. These guys are very very aggressive and active fish, one of my tanks I put a school of 5 of them together and they chip at each other quite a bit, but they don't bother any other fish in the system. I have seen them nip at my Duncans, and they can be known to nip LPS if they aren't well fed.

If I feed them nicely, will they still destroy my LPS?
Most likely.

I had ora aiptasia filefish, he ate all my aiptasia and then was model citizen for a few months eating brine, flake, mysis, pellets etc 2-3x a day and then he ate an acan and it was game over. No amount of feeding would stop him it was like an obsession. He would eat frozen food in 2-3x portions and as soon as I’d stop he would go after the lps. First the acans and then the torches and hammers. Killed them all. It was like he was hypnotized or mesmerized by them.

I suspect these aiptasia eating fish just have an instinct to eat fleshy moving things and once that instinct kicks in it can’t be reversed.

Yes they will i just caught my stripey for rehoming, i thought a coral banded shrimp was doing damage to my surprise it was the stripey, 2 heads on a New york knicks torch one green LTA and working on a pearl plus nipping at my rock flowers grew crazy fast antagonizes my tangs hes cute kids love him bit wild and aggressive

I got him for aptasia controlling, and boy did he do that, big time. I was treating aptasia with sodium hydroxide almost weekly. No more.

Dont have many LPS, just Duncans and a small micromussa. Hasn’t touched them yet and it’s been at least 6 months.

mine has yet to touch my duncans as well, here's hoping bc it's my favourite fish and i couldn't bear to part with it now. they watch and understand everything that happens with those giant eyeballs. my tank is in sight of my fridge and my stripey absolutely understands fridge = food and goes nuts every time i open it.

Was about to get one, thank you for the insight
