Fluval Spec 19L Reef Setup — FTS Profile

Introduction

After nearly a decade away from reef keeping, I’m excited to return with a fresh start: a simple Pico reef system designed for enjoyment and sustainability. My focus this time is on clarity, balance, and good husbandry practices, rather than chasing specialist equipment as I did in the past.

---

Equipment List

• Aquarium: Fluval Spec 19L (52 × 19 × 29.5 cm, clear glass)
• Filtration: Standard Fluval rear compartment with Zeomix & AquaForest Micro E media
• Lighting: Hygger 30W LED unit
• Flow: 2 × Tunze Mini water pumps
• Heating: AquaOne 25W heater
• Monitoring: Digital thermometer

---

System Profile

Component Specification
Display Tank Volume 19 L
Filtration System Original Fluval Spec rear chamber
Filtration Media Zeomix, AquaForest Micro E
Water Circulation 2 × Tunze Mini power heads
Lighting Hygger 30W LED
Test Kits Salifert (Calcium, Nitrate, Magnesium, pH)
Dosing Additives balling lite part two AquaForest Micro E, Rowa Carbon, Rowa Phos

---

Livestock Plans

• Corals: Primarily LPS, with select SPS and soft corals for variety
• Fish: A small, characterful species — most likely a goby — chosen to complement the corals without overloading the system
• Clean-up Crew: Balanced mix to maintain stability and reduce maintenance

---

Goals

• Maintain a clean, uncomplicated system supported by consistent husbandry
• Focus on essential supplementation (magnesium, calcium, alkalinity) rather than advanced dosing systems
• Build a visually appealing, sustainable reef that emphasizes enjoyment and learning

Closing Note

This project is about rediscovering the joy of reef keeping in its simplest form. By keeping the system streamlined and focusing on fundamentals, I aim to create a rewarding and sustainable reef environment.

The new corals include:

  • Blue and Green Montipora
  • Red Chalice
  • Forest of Fire Rhodactis mushroom
  • Euphyllia (Pink Tip Hammer)
  • Two mixed pink/red zoa frags
  • Rasta zoa
  • Green Star Polyp
I’ve also added a very small clownfish, which has been a great little character to watch. Please note that I’m currently in the process of upgrading, so this is only a temporary home for the fish.

Cheers,
Dan

Full Tank Shot – March Reef Update

My last full‑tank update was on the 1st of February, so I’ve taken a fresh set of photos to show how the system has progressed over the past month. It’s great to see how much colour and growth the tank is developing. Under the blue spectrum lighting, the corals are really starting to show their full fluorescence and personality.

The scape is now home to a vibrant mix of species, including:

  • Blue and Green Montipora adding structure and bold colour across the rockwork
  • Red Chalice, bringing deep, rich tones and a striking contrast
  • Forest of Fire Rhodactis Mushroom, glowing with intense orange and green highlights
  • Euphyllia (Pink Tip Hammer) providing movement and soft, flowing texture
  • Two mixed pink/red zoa frags, each adding pops of colour as they begin to spread
  • Rasta Zoa, with their signature neon rings
  • Green Star Polyp, creating a bright, waving carpet effect
The tank is settling in nicely, and each coral is showing great polyp extension and colouration. It’s rewarding to see the system maturing and becoming more vibrant with every update.
