BackbayReef’s 550gal: angels, tangs, and acros!

Unbeknownst to you, I have been following your thread, @backbayreef .

Over a month with no updates/posts? Unacceptable!

Stalker! lol

Appreciate following along - the tank has been on autopilot. I bought an Avast Plank, feeding 5x a day so pretty much not doing anything except watching stuff grow, albeit slowly.

My params have been super boring..hence not doing much!

Well, like, it would be nice to see some tank pics. 😉

I need to dose something — still scratching my head as to why acros are not growing! Monticap and digita’s are growing though. Wait to be fair — some cheapy acros do grow. Will take some more pics tomorrow after work.

NO3/PO4 in check - love the sulfur denitrator! NO3 has always been under 5ppm with heavy feeding…

NO3: ORP is above -100mV
PO4: dosing PhosphatE at 8mL/day

Sending in ICP this week to see where we’re at… I was low on traces several months ago. Curious - what do you guys dose? I’m pretty sure I’m low on Iodine, Iron, Zinc, Manganese, and Vanadium

Secret to fast growth is to let your coralline grow like crazy everywhere, and don't clean your front glass. Wait a couple months and you'll see all kinds of growth when you clean the glass again.

And growth goes backwards when you scrape the back wall? 🤣

uh ok - awesome tip, lazy bum! 😆 You managed to do the ultra reveal on your tank yet? It was smothered in coralline algae!!

I came back from vacation and guess that something did grow, albeit too slow for my taste. My 150gal’s SPS was growing like weeds before the reset — I’m trying to recreate that growth explosion.

We went out of the country for 3 weeks and the tank was on autopilot mode. I got the Avast Plank though - super cool.

I’m thinking about shutting down so I can get out of town and not have to be concerned with the reef or the fish & the things that can go wrong when I have my back turned.

Good to see you got away with getting out of town for 3 weeks!

Automations, baby! It was kinda stressful trying to get 4 tanks to last a month but easier than I thought. The toughest part was scraping the coralline algae off the acrylics tanks after 3wks — that took hours! lol

We toured Japan and Vietnam — had a lot of delicious sushi so kinda feel guilty (or hungry?) when I got back to my tanks.

Looking great!!!!! The water is so clear!
Thanks - I need a better camera and learn how to take good reefing pics. Ozone does wonders, fish swimming in mid air! ;)

Someone posted “Scraperite” wide handle (4”) plastic blade scrapers, I really hate them but I love them, for coralline removal! I really need to get one out and get busy.

Nothing wrong with going out for sushi and bringing home a fishie bag for the tank.😎

Haven't been around in ages, how's the fish, @backbayreef
Good to hear from you - you good?

Fish doing great - zero isssues, no ich, no flukes, nada! It’s actually peaceful with those angels & tangs. In fact, the French Angel is the size of a medium dinner plate now! My other fish from other tanks are getting too big but I’m resisting to move them here, disturbing the balance.

I’ve been focusing on the something else lately; therefore the tanks are on autopilot.

Why is your ORP so low?
By design - this ORP probe is inside the biodenitrator, measuring negative ORP. Max denitrification happens at around -200mV to -250mV. I’m at -50mV to -100mV since I don’t want to reduce NO3 further.

The Apex can’t read negative ORP — I’ve reversed the polarity already. That number is actually a negative number. I did this 4mos ago — super effective at reducing & maintaining nitrate levels on big tanks with huge fish.
