Back in May, I made an unplanned purchase of a pair of Banggai Cardinals from the LFS. The pair was in a different tank from the rest of their Banggai, and the guy said he had separated them because it looked like they had paired off to him. It was a 30% off all fish day, so they were $14 each. I had no idea what to do with them but I couldn't resist. When I got home, I ended up putting them in a BC14 that I am using as a frag tank.

Now 12 weeks in, the bigger of the 2 has abruptly stopped eating in the last few days. It also appears that his lower lip is bulging. Based on what I have read, I guess this means that he is carrying eggs? It also occured to me that the same fish refused to eat the first 2 weeks I had him while the smaller cardinal never had a problem with eating.... Perhaps he was carrying when I got him and this is there second time?

With MACNA coming up, I don't expect I will be able to do anything with this clutch, but I am interested in eventually trying to raise some. I am thinking I might get a book for the plane ride. Is there any good books on Banggai breeding?

I would recommend Matt Wittenrich's book breeders guide to marine aquarium fish. Matt has a chapter on bangaii cardinals. It's a great book and got me started breeding fish successfully. Good luck!
