Banngai Aggression after eggs failed

Hi everyone,
I have a mated pair of Cardinals, last Tuesday they produced eggs and the male held them for four days before presumably swallowing them - I noticed this morning that they were gone. Since the eggs failed, the male has been herding the female around and bullying her constantly all day today. Has anyone else experienced this at all?
Neither of them have eaten today either!
