Sorry - just to confirm... the 8-30 Bio Reactor - not the 8-3 Bio SPACE Reactor?
Two different machines - both very effective, the 8-30 is a bit more of an industrial set up and does require a separate air pump, the 8-3 is more compact, and does not need an air pump.
At the Club or like, a set up with a sump room, I would run bio reactor, for cleaner, more streamlined look/most home aquariums, the bio space would be my preference!

As far as pump - there's no reason it won't work, since that is a controllable pump - it will just be a matter of dialing it in to get the right movement!
I didn’t realize there were 2 types of bio reactors. My system has a large separate sump room where all my equipment is kept. My tank is an in wall 325g and my sump is 200g. I guess I’m not entirely clear or sure of which one would be best for my application.

I think you would love either machine honestly, but you made me think alittle bit - if I was setting this system up today, what would I plan for myself - and I think all of the littler differences between the two considered: I think I'd go Bio Space!

I’m in the planning stage of an upgrade to my office waiting room reef tank. Going from 120-220 largely to get more under tank space for more degrees of automation. This reactor appeals to me for the set and forget ease. Would you recommend way oversized if I have the space or is it diminishing returns? The 8-1 would work but I do have room for the 8-3.
I placed an order over the weekend for 2 of the 8-3 Bio Space reactors in orange with the hard plumbed lid. I’m being told that there is a delay in manufacturing. If true, do we have any idea of when they will be available?

Yeah pretty much. I have the original version, and the only difference is you run an air line to it, but it needs to be a heavy duty pump to get the media moving. I have absolutely no proof it makes a difference. I only still run it cause I couldnt sell it. The newer version I have no experience with.

This concept goes back further than that. Moving bed bioreactors (MBBRs) have been used in aquaculture and wastewater treatment for decades. A little in the aquarium trade too, but at the DIY level.

The basic idea is that you have media that is slightly postively-buoyant, but close to neutral buoyancy. This media houses the bacteria. It stays in constant motion, which allows the media to bump into each other. This makes it self-cleaning for the most part. It's a type of "thin film reactor". The media bumping into each other sloughs-off any large chunks of biofilm.
Typically this just involves a tank, some aeration, and some strainers on the inlet and outlet to keep the media in the tank. Aeration is used to move the media, but it also has the benefit of providing oxygen to the bacteria, and CO2 removal.
The Bashsea version uses a water pump instead. Because we keep low bioloads in our reef tanks this should work fine as well. A typical MBBR will have 50-70% of the volume filled with media, and it looks like Bashsea was able to achieve that with their product.
What makes this unique is it's small (appropriate for home aquariums) and you can buy it as a kit. DIY is always an option (and cheaper) but Bashsea makes it simpler for the average consumer.

I’m also waiting for an 8-3 in orange (though I could care less what color)
I guess we’ll find out soon enough after a month passes lol
I ordered mine from saltwateraquarium.com and followed up with them. They said they had reached out to Bashsea and was told that. Mine haven’t shipped yet and it’s been a week since i ordered them. So there maybe some truth to it. I’m hoping to hear from Bashsea directly to confirm.
