Be careful buying corals!

I’ve bought many corals! I’ve been scammed many times :/ unfortunately you must have a trained eye and know what to look out for when buying corals and I’ve learned this the hard way. I primarily buy LPS corals and I have bought almost all my coral from other reefers. One thing I’ve learned after buying a dying coral a couple times is to carefully observe the coral before you buy. You need to look for pests and you need to look for signs of receding tissue etc. When buying coral especially from local reefers you must be very careful. I want to know what you guys look at when buying coral! Have you ever been ripped off?

I’m writing this as I just bought a frogspawn with some receding tissue at the base. Didn’t notice in the tank because the coral was op
 
I’ve never been scammed, but I don’t think a pest or injured coral is a scam. Maybe if it came from a farm but if it’s just from a store or another persons tank there are never going to be guarantees. In most cases a dying coral can be easy to spot and plenty of healthy corals can decline quickly.
