First pic is my drains, second pic is my pump controller at the lowest setting, 3rd pic shows the inside of the overflow box..
Note that my secondary drain height is 1.75” higher than my main drain inside overflow box… why is it that when I increase my pump speed the drain flows more and I can’t ever adjust it with the gate valve to make it quiet again? My tank is 180 gallon 6x2x2. Why can’t I add more flow and it remain quiet?

How much flow are you generating with that pump? It's going to be guesswork/trial-and-error without knowing that.

Measure the amount of water flowing through the drain(s) and time how long it takes to fill a container of a known volume....do the math to calculate GPH.

Are your drains 1" diameter PVC?

Is this a new system? Is it possible there's a clog?

1” drains, not a new system. I just wanna be able to up the speed and maintain a quiet drain but can only manage this at the lowest settings … which I think is about 450gph

I just built my overflow and and I had to add a couple of inches to the primary 1" drain and secondary drain to let the overflow back chamber fill up with water. I also have 90° elbows to create the siphon. I let the emergency drain located in the middle start to drain overflow box, then I tweaked my gate valve to allow the water level to be even with the top of my secondary drain. Hope this helps. It was trial and error, but once tweaked totally silent and tons of flow.

I don’t know if I have the room in my overflow to create siphon pipes like you.. the opening sticks out too much

Crap my emergency drain is not in the middle

The inside diameter of that primary drain standpipe looks suspiciously small for 1”, when comparing it to the adjacent secondary drain…

What sort of fitting do you have on the end of the primary drain standpipe? It appears to be a substantial restriction!

—furthermore, 1” sch.40 PVC pipe will struggle to exceed 1,300GPH on a typical aquarium pump… what Simplicity pump are you using?

These elbows are actually intended to be for noise reduction, not starting a siphon! — the standpipe acts like a resonator in some installs, so elbows are added (with drilled air vent hole) to submerge the standpipe inlet during normal operation!

The siphon is started simply by having the water line above the top rim of the primary drain standpipe, then it is controlled via gate so it doesn’t start and stop!

Emergency drain can go anywhere, the whole overflow box changes in water line equally; you don’t magically have a higher water line in the middle!

The emergency does not need to be in the middle. Open top pipes tend to be noisy in general and an open top siphon can create a vortex that draws in air. This creates noise and can severely and limit the maximum flow rate.
