Beginner corals - loved today, hated tomorrow?

Which corals are the usual suspects for beginners that i’ll regret tomorrow. GSP is obvious. But which others should I avoid that will eventually take over?

Not going to lie, I’ve had GSP for some time now and don’t regret it one bit. It’s not terribly hard to frag off the overgrowth, and can be absolutely gorgeous coating an ugly, shaded rock that other coral won’t grow on.

Yeah, I agree with the above. When placed properly, GSP can be really wonderful. Beautiful green color, lots of movement. I have two colonies of it growing on the back wall of my Biocube.

My goal is not to have to perpetually scrape off. And I’m way too green to think about fragging something so early on.

The usual suspects are GSP, xenia, kenya tree, anthelia, and blue sympodium. But if GSP and xenia are placed on its own rock surrounded by sand it should keep it from spreading. blue sympodium spreads and grows everywhere but doesn't sting other corals. So if you wait until your tank is full of coral and use it to fill in the bare spots it shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't even put kenya tree or anthelia in my tank because pieces break off and will float around your tank and take hold anywhere and everywhere. Another less obvious is green pocillopora coral. it's been known to break off and start growing everywhere.

xenia is the winner for this one. There are others, but xenia is the one that I think of most quickly.

Monitipora, Pocilopora and Birdsnest are the SPS corals i wish i didnt get. Faster growth compared to my favorite acros

Xenia is the one coral I want to send back to where ever I got it from. It is nice to look at but it will grow on anything and spread like the measles in your tank. I have to prune every month it seems to control it.

I already have gsp and montis, but don’t like any of the “cauliflower” corals. Hopefully folks will add some more “suspects”
