Hey everyone,

I have a 16 gallon biocube tank. Looking to get recommendations on the best coral frags to start with for a beginner. In the tank, I currently have some snails, a peppermint shrimp, and a clownfish pair.

If your system is ready for soft coral, Zoa are small, colourful and relatively easy to keep.

Tons of vibrant colours.

I would suggest Zoas and Hammers.

I second zoas. Many different colors available and you don't need a lot of strong lighting. Problem with many beginner corals is they can become invasive and completely take over a small tank.
An example is this GSP. It started from a little piece maybe 2 inches. The good thing is I wanted it to cover the back wall. It would own a small tank on the rocks.

Some ideas for you:

Good luck!

I agree with people saying zoas, and green star polyps are easy but they can be hard to remove if they take over (I glued them to the back wall and am happy with them taking that over). I would also add mushrooms to the list. They can take over… but there are also some really nice looking ones that are pretty easy and I would be happy if they split (can trade for other things). They aren’t cheap but something like a bounce mushroom or jawbreaker isn’t hard to keep alive and are pretty sought after. Just don’t impulsively get something that can take over because it’s easy, because you might not be able to get it out eventually
