I recently switched from a canister filter to a sump after inheriting a sump from a friend. The return pump seems to be extremely loud. Looking for suggestions for whats the best pumps out there now for a 129g reef tank?

It depends on your budget. AC pumps are loud(er) but reliable workhorses. They have less tuning options than DC pumps, which are far quieter, slightly less reliable, and easier to tune with feeding modes, flow speeds, etc. In my opinion the ease of use of DC pumps outweigh their cost and cons. Some reliable ac brands are Sicce, Lifegard Aquatics, etc. For cheap DC returns Jebao is popular but are hit and miss for lifespan. On the more expensive end, the Varios line from Reef Octopus (Octo) and the vectra series from Ecotech are great dc pumps, but definitely on the higher side of price. Your budget will really dictate your choices here.

pretty much what he/she said.
i just switch over to a Neptune Cor20 DC pump after 5 years on a QuietOne that wasn't very quiet at all. The audible difference is night and day but as previously mentioned the AC pumps likely will last longer.

Sicce all the way

If you're looking for the best then Abyzz or Royal Exclusive. If not in the budget, then look at Vario-S

What is your current pump? Is it loud due to vibration from contact with sump? Vibration noise can be greatly reduced or even eliminated.

I use the ecotech M2 and i dont hear it when i turn on or off, just cant telll.... very smooth and durable... using for a returm pump on a 100g display
