Saw a brief discussion about bio balls.

Some people say never use them other people say use them. Someone said that they are a nitrate hoarder.

Are they necessary?

So if I recall correctly the theory was lots of surface area to allow for bacteria to grow and fulfill the cycle. Seems I recall everyone pulling them out and filling their sumps with rock, plants, etc. there was similar upheaval with sand in tank. Fwiw I still have a handful of balls in my sump but only because it breaks up the sound of falling water.

If you have a sufficient amount of rock in your tank they aren’t necessary.
