Need your help with a situation!!

My fiancé and I are moving out of our apartment in October and into her parents place for a few months (I know, not ideal!). However, given the situation we are currently in it is our most responsible option.

I have a 40 breeder that I’m not sure what to do with. When I brought up the idea of moving the tank in they weren’t thrilled with the idea. So it’s sounding like it’s either going in the basement which is unfinished or taking the ‘ol girl down for a few months.

What would you guys do?

How would you take it down? You have fish and coral that require feeding and light, so I don't see how that is an option.

If it is an unfinished basement, I think you will be okay, as long as there is climate control. Move it in to the basement and set it up.

In the words of the great Ralph Kramden: "Sure... Alice and I moved in with her parents for a short time when we first got married... It was the worst SIX years of my life!"

Just leave it in the basement for a few months. You may not enjoy it as much down there but you can certainly keep it alive, and don't have to worry too much about creating a mess.

Before I moved into my house I had all my livestock in various holding tanks in my parents bathroom for 6 weeks. a 55 gallon tank across the bath tub, a 90 gallon tank squeezed in and bucket after bucket on the floor. It was not ideal in any way and I actually lost a ton of live stock but I had no other option less getting rid of everything. A 40 gallon breeder would not be too bad to move.

You have to do what is right for your situation..
If you take it down do you have people who can hold your livestock?
You can always sell it too?
Sometimes moves end up way longer than what you think.. It is not best to make waves sometimes with the future parents.. Also moving a tank once is allot but twice...

Everything is replaceable and your relationships with family is more important.
I am am assuming they are doing this to help you out...

Thanks for the replies! Yes they are doing to help us while my fiancé does her student teaching (unpaid) and we get ready for the wedding.

When I say take it down it would be selling the livestock and coral and drying the rock out but keeping all my stuff to set it back up once we move out.

I would rather just keep it going since I have some good healthy nems that keep splitting and this is my first tank so I still have my original fish! I would hate to see them go.

Not sure how to answer this. If you 'take it down' you'll have to give everything away (thats alive) or sell it. Is there some reason you dont want to put it in the basement? Seems that would be the best option. If the reason you're concerned is the time it will take to transfer everything safely, etc - if you can do everything in 12 hours or so you shouldn't have any problems with cycling, etc.

I’ve had two wives and too many tanks to count and even managed a fish store 30+ years ago so I’ve had some experience with tanks and in-laws and marriage and divorce and animal separations.
Going into a marriage is a difficult time, and moving into her parents place is like putting two sets of breeding clownfish into a 5 gallon aquarium (aka a “nano” sized tank ).
I won’t try to talk you out of getting married or moving into her parents place but you should not take another living thing into their home that isn’t wanted there. If you are going to get married too a wife and your fish then it would be necessary to keep the fish but since that is not the case you need to be responsible for their best interests while you pursue your own.
I understand that this isn’t what you want to do but you will have a full plate at least until after you move out and since you are not signing the lease you’ll have little say if things get weird.

Only one wife for me, but just for the peace of mind knowing that you aren't going to have any issues about fish with the new almost inlaws I would tear it down for now. As someone else mentioned - a few weeks can easily become a few months or longer. Why run the risk of it? Why give them any reason at all to decide to not like you?

Bedroom is out of the option due to the size. I’m pretty sure they would be fine with the tank in the basement. My only thing is I hate the thought of moving the tank twice within a year or less.

Trust me, I would rather keep everything going, like I said, this is my first tank with my original fish so I would love to keep them going!

I have a crazy thought - and its not a criticism. Keep your tank, let your SO do her student teaching while she lives with her parents. This has nothing to do with your tank lol - it has to do with the relationship with the two of you - because - with a tank - or without a tank - its likely to change significantly living with her parents - and in all likelihood - not for the better. (I have had experience with a parent moving in for an extended period of time) - it was necessary - but - it was kind of a disaster. Unless you really know the parents - IMO - I wouldn't risk it - again the tank will be the absolute least of your problems. You may think - its better financially, its better socially, etc etc - I humbly suggest - when you can afford to move into together (your own place) - Do it then - but not before.

BTW - this was based on the fact that you're asking - ab out the tank in the basement - of course that would be the best - but there has to be a reason youre asking (i.e. the vibe that they dont want it at all) - who cares about whether its enjoyed - if its empty - no one is going to enjoy it. It really seems to me that there is a lot more to your question that you've asked...

My recommendation would be to take it down. Focus on priorities. Save your money, get your own place, and when you can get the tank back up and running. I kept and moved a tank stand for my 90 around with me for 14 years before finally setting the tank back up. You guys are going to rent, move, buy a home, move, change jobs, etc etc... life is going to happen.

There's always going to be new equipment on the market and even used deals when people get out. So when the time is right, you'll be surprised at whats out there.
