Blastomussa wellsi care

Hi guys!

Santa’s just dropped a Blastomussa wellsi for my tank... :-)

I have been reading thru web about how to best care for this coral but I value more my fellow r2r reefers input, so please be so kind you Blasto experts to give me some bias about how to make this coral happy.

Take care of the tank and these guys will thrive. Not much to taking care of them. I mounted a blasto colony in the dark because I had no more room. It’s done way better than I thought it would. No light touches this thing and it’s full and fat. Another blasto colony I have is in the bottom in a moderate flow area and is doing great. Good luck.

Only one is in the dark. Water quality matters. As long as your tank is stable, you shouldn’t have any issues. There are no special considerations when keeping blastos.

They love to eat, and will grow a little faster with regular meals. Lighting doesn’t seem to affect them too much. Started with a 4 polyp frag in October of last year, and now have this:

Blasts are my personal favorite and I have several. They grow slow but as long as you’re consistent, they will be happy. I would attach that colony to a rock so that they have something to grow onto as they spread at their base. Good luck!

Food, you mean target feed mysis?

Low to medium light, moderate indirect flow with occasional feedings of reef nutrition oyster feast mixed with reef roids have kept ours very happy and growing.

Yes they do not like bright lighting. If it starts to close on you put it in a low light area and it will bloom out huge! Target feed and it will thrive for you. You don’t need to but I have noticed a huge difference in mine sense I started target feeding once a week.

Yes. They love mysis, and pretty much everything else including stray fish pellets. I’ve even caught mine trying to digest a shrimp’s shed exoskeleton. Recently, I’ve been feeding Hikari Coralific Delight, which I turn into a gel with tank water and aminos and feed with a pipette.
