So for reference I have 3 red Cortez hermit crabs, 2 blue legged and 2 Halloween hermit crabs, I have roughly 6-10 extra shells for the smaller hermit crabs. All day today my bigger blue legged hermit crab is singling out and attacking one of my Cortez crabs, he completely ripped him out of his shell and ripped one of his arms off, I see absolutely no reason for this. At first I thought it was because the cortex had taken the shell my blue legged revelry changed out of and he wanted it back but later in the day I noticed blue had changed shells again to a bigger one similar to the one he use to have and figured they were fine but he still insisted on fighting, I just had to break them apart and set them on opposite sides of the tank (after giving Cortez a new shell because he had gotten ripped out of his) is this a common occurrence? Are blue legged hermit crabs just aggressive like this for no reason? They have ample food and I assumed a nice selection of shells in very confused on what to do and how to prevent this but unfortunately I have a feeling I will wake up ATLEAST 1 hermit crab short.

They’ve been in the tank together for roughly 2 weeks now and have never shown any signs of aggression towards each other or any other of the hermit crabs or snail.

Unfortunately, part of the process. :(

My blue legged and red legged crabs have these MMA cage matches a lot. Sometimes ends up with severed limbs.

Even if I put them on opposite ends of my 90g, they will find each other and tussle again.

Similar has happened to me as well. I had a 10 gallon, had 10 blue legs, 2 took over the tank and killed the rest. When they died I just got more snails. Now I'm just a snail guy.

This is just how it goes unfortunately. I've never seen much success in keeping a specific variety either, so now I just toss whatever hermit crabs into the tank. They either fight amongst each other or get eaten by one of the fish.

Only the strong survive in the 100gal.
