Blue Spot Jawfish vs Pearly Jawfish

Behavior, looks, etc....who is better? Blue spot or Pearly? AND how long have your blue spot survived with you before a natural/mystery death? (Jumping out doesn't count, k)

I don't have either and plan on having either one blue spot or a pair of pearly. All the youtube videos I've seen shows Pearlies being way more active and blue spot being a bit boring.

I LOVED my blue spot. I have had many unfortunately in a short period due to them jumping but ome in particualr that I had the longest was awesome. Most personable fish I have had by far with a close second of my mystery wrasse. I could hand little rocks to him and hed grab them out of my hand and put them on his rock burrow. If something messed up his borrow aka a rogue emerald crab, hed bite the crab and start building again. Much prettier too than pearlys. I had a pearly for 2 days and couldnt find the body anywhere. Still a mystery today. I have probably lost 6 jawfish in 2 years though due to a non complete top. I mean they will find a way to jump through a 2×2 inch opening so be prepared!

if I read correctly bsj tend to live short lives in an aquarium. How long did yours last before a natural death. Jumping dont count. Im curious to know if they have short lives or not.

Love my little BSJ! I've had him about 6 months now.

I've had mine about 2 weeks, he's too cool. So far he's built 3 homes, think he's finally settled down in this one and is using unihabited shells, a frag plug, etc to make his cave. Fun to watch, and he's coming out more and more now which is nice. This pic is home #2. And yes, I read about the cool water thing AFTER my purchase, but I'll give it a go now since I have him. Also, after 3 Bartlet Anthias and a Diamond Goby jumped to their death, I put a mesh top on my tank.

Whats considered cool water? I know they are collected in deepwater off of mexico but I'm just curious because I haven't herd that before. My temp is at 74-75 degrees, is it colder than that?

They seem to do better in lower temps (As in 75, max) but I'm pretty sure it's in the low 70's to upper 60's.... They seem to be most common near the tip of Baja, near the primary range of the Clarion angelfish. Then you lower the temp a bit due to them living in holes in the rock 20ft down.... they are not cold water fish, more of a "temperate" species, which is kinda in between tropical and cold water.
I think the pearly jawfish is a cool species, a bit more suited to out tanks, and I think they are just as pretty, Dusky jawfish and Black cap jawfish are not as commonly seem and are also neat species.

I had my blue dot for 582 days before my tank got really bad ick outbreak and it died. I keep my tank between 73 and 75 and it did fine. But for ick, it still be around! the only reason why I would switched to a pearly is because it would be cool to have a pair.
