Yeah, in my LFS, they have all their tangs in a tiny tank, been like that for a while
The difference is Fish stores have continuously rotating stock and the displays are small so the fish are easy to observe and catch. They're not meant for long term care.

Hey reefers, i walked into my LFS recently and asked for suggestions on the next fish i could add to my 33 gallon/120 litre cube tank, my LFS suggested a blue tang. I asked if my tank is too small for a blue tant as i heard they grow big. He said that they usually grow within the constraints of the tank so he shouldn't grow that big. Is this true? Would a blue tang work in my tank?
My goodness the advice LFS will give to sell fish... I am assuming it has a blue hippo tang? If so. Minimum 180g on principle. Helps fight ich.

to give you more context.. I added a juvenile 1"-2" to my 110g and it grew to 5" in under a year. I just rehomed it.

Many stores keep baby blue tangs in tanks less than 30 gallons. I have seen blue tangs be in those tanks for long times. They don’t die there
They are only there for a short time. Even 6-8 weeks is a short time. They also usually dose copper just at a level to control ich, not kill it. The store I trust around me uses UV as well. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about how they keep their fish. You are the one making the purchase after all. Just remember, you get what you pay for most of the time.

I just started a 235 after a 15 year hiatus, so you might see me more here.
