Boat or RV? EDIT: Decision made!

Where is that? It’s beautiful!

That’s the Cleveland Ohio Harbor looking back over the Browns stadium, port of Cleveland and downtown.

Our marina is about a 1/2 mile from where we took the picture

If you look to the far right I live on the top floor of one of the old buildings there

Your lucky to live in a area where you get a lot of use out of a boat. Here in the northeast we get a few good months of use and that’s about it. But I love it. Whatever choice you make enjoy for a few Seasons weather a camper or boat if you hate it sell it. Good luck in your choice I’m sure you’ll enjoy either and congrats to your husband on his retirement!

I agree, if we had more than a couple months of good weather Cleveland would be considered one of the best places for boating. Unfortunately we don’t and we spend 9 months every year waiting for boating season

Len

Good luck making a decision, is the solution both? :P
Not mine but looks like a good time!

It’s torture is t it?

Lol, looks like a travel nightmare.

That's as long as my work truck and one of our large aluminum work boats.
Both are so long we need to disconnect and take up 2 spots at the boat ramp.

Not exactly an F250 and a small bass boat.
[emoji846]

RV

Rent one first. For a long weekend to start out.

Rent another, different one, next.
[emoji846]

Check out different floor plans before renting.
It sounds like you have enough money to own a decent mattress at home. [emoji846]
There is no such thing as a *comfortable* "dinette that converts to a bed". [emoji53]

Yes, taking "sea" showers in those mini showers are miserable compared to the real thing. [emoji846]
Almost a deal breaker for me.

Planet Fitness $20 a month membership covers all locations/semi comfortable showers.
It is amazing how many locations there are.

Assure adult wash cloths to stretch it a day or 2. But not if you are getting really dirty doing maintenance or whatever.

Suggest keeping the RV under 30'.
And newer.

Lots of RV parks restrict by size and age.

Sooooooo many little surprises about RV's.
Backflow preventer for your potable water style hose.
Lots of bungie cords and those thin rubber placemats for in between rattling dishes.
Hooking up black tanks and grey tanks is easy enough. Thousands of people do it every day. [emoji846]

Lots of great videos of every aspect on YouTube.

Like a 40 hour rabbit hole worth.
[emoji846]
Mostly fun, interesting, and gracefully covers an easy but steep learning curve.
[emoji846]

Our house is paid for. I would love to travel the country for a few weeks at a time every year, but very cheaply.
Keeping the cost down is almost as much 'fun' at this point as anything else.
Lol, except for every helicopter tour available. [emoji6]

Personal priorities are
1. Comfortable mattress as good as home or at least Holiday Inn.
(Lol, spire elite at Holiday Inn thanks to work.)
2. Comfortable shower
3. Ease of driving/access to small parking lots.

I keep thinking a flexible but well researched travel plan and "van life" with a decent full sized raised mattress and planet fitness showers will be the most efficient for us.

Parking at (well, everywhere) reasonably easy is an important priority (for us).
Running out to get a few groceries, dinner out, anything really, involves taking your motor vehicle there.
(Might mention I'm forgetful on a professional level. [emoji849]
"Oh shoot, we need to go back for "X" doesn't work well with an RV.)

BOAT

easy on/off the trailer is number one.
Too many boat styles to list. [emoji846]

Convenience of use means I would use it more.

Lol, I know people love them. But I could care less about owning one.
Hanging out with friends that have them is fun. We always have a great time. [emoji846]
But I'll be happy to buy the beer/food forever vs owning one that's not a work boat. [emoji846]

We own a Lance RV travel trailer model 1985. It’s real nice to go north into the mountains and get away from Phoenix heat on the occasional weekend. We park in the forest and just chill.

I don’t like cold. We spend nine moths dreading winter!

That’s a nightmare! Backing that thing to a boat launch would be near impossible. Going to the grocery wouldn’t be fun either.

Excellent advice. Here’s what I know... I have suggested we rent an RV first to see if we like it. Actually, it’s a must. We’ve looked at new ones with all kinds of floor plans. A decent sized bathroom is a must. I’m not putting my feet in the shower while going potty. A new mattress is a priority. I’m 6’1” and have long legs. Just sitting on the seats with the table is near impossible. My knees almost hit the opposite seat. Most of the RV parks we’ve been to have showers. But, we’ve only been to ones here that are part of a park system. Planet fitness isn’t a bad idea though. My truck won’t want to pull 30’. We’re thinking more in the range of 20’. I do realize that the larger it is, the more comfortable. More comfortable means we’re more likely to use it. There’s a fine line. It’s the unknown, hidden things that we fear. I’ve had boats all my life but never an RV. We just paid off our house too. That’s what is giving us the freedom to do this. I fancy jumping in an RV and just driving until we want to stop. See what’s there. I will pull with a truck... not a motor home. To the store means unhooking and driving truck.

As for boat... we have no friends. That sounds pitiful but we really don’t. There are lots of folks we know.... some better than others. When we lived in Louisiana, we had great friends but it’s different there. We live out in the country. We have neighbors but they’re far enough away that we never see them. The boat is for us. My family of 4 and a toddler. Peaceful.

What size is that? Is it a motor home or pull behind? It’s hot here too.... mountains are too far away though. We would just like to go somewhere!

Man I love Google!

I used to do a lot of research through Consumer Reports, library, etc.
Love "feeding the elephant" effortlessly!

So the 20' trailer will be similar to the horse trailers. Nice and easy.[emoji846]
The main advantage to eventually buying a trailer vs renting is customizing the chairs/benches.
Lol, being 5'8" doesn't have too many advantages outside of tiny living spaces. [emoji846]

BLM land is the popular craze out West.
Lots of free boondocking in quiet beautiful places.

But most land east of the Rockies is useable. [emoji6]

So someone owns it. [emoji23]

My uncle spent ten years where he and his wife traveled the lower 48 in a ginormous RV and tow behind car.
3 slideouts!
He was retired Air force and scheduled trips from location to location on different bases. They loved it.
After 10 years they sold it and bought into a 55+ community near the grand kids near Ocala, Florida.

Lots of preplanning should give you options with beautiful National and state parks. But winging it in an RV may be a near complete loss.[emoji53]
(One of the advantages of van life is the usual tent camping availability. Bring a tent. Pitch a tent. Sleep in the van anyway. [emoji6])

The fine line between comfortable and 'too big' is 100% personal preference.
Lol, the van idea is where I keep ending up.
Or as 1 YouTuber put it. "You sleep in the van, but 'live' outside."
"Real" RV's have a certain respectability. Especially if you are an older couple. [emoji846]

Hooking up the black tanks and grey tanks and 'monitoring' your water usage are the big things to get used to. (How many times have you *and your better half* gone to the bathroom in the past 2 days? is *not* something most of us think about regularly. [emoji23])
Lol, standing in the shower for 10 minutes soaking up the hot water is *not* an option. [emoji53]

Power usage is another one.
A $2000+ 1000watt solar/battery system may be complete overkill.
(And irrelevant in most rentals)
An $800 'silent' suitcase generator (sadly, chained to your vehicle) can run a *tiny* microwave, among other things.
But probably not the unit's A/C.
Important to check!

There are portable roll around house ac units that use less watts ( but only the smallest models) that will cool down a 10x20 space and still not overload a tiny generator.
(Our hurricane backup for the den/fish room. We will need to juggle, swap every few hours between running the ac and running the fish tank, fridge and freezer in the kitchen)
Lol, those wonderful light, quiet generators can only do so much without the backup unit attached.

Make sure the roll around ac unit has been stored upright for at least 24 hours before use! Otherwise it will probably be damaged/destroyed if you try to use it sooner.

East of the Rockies, some type of camping membership isn't a bad idea. Search YouTube for opening suggestions. [emoji846]
Definitely get the Sams club rv/towing insurance (probably a lot less critical with just a trailer?) or some other brand.

Lol, since you have had horse trailers for years, I'm sure you know about checking the axels for overheating several times per trip and greasing them properly. [emoji846]

RV's are "just like home". Except they are not even close. [emoji846]
Minor pitfalls that you tolerate for a week, until you get home, and will remember better for next time, are just part of it. [emoji846]

Enjoy the adventure!

Boat.
I run a boat every day for a living and I still look forward to taking my personal boat out whenever I can.
That being said ...... our retirement plan is a pop up, cab over camper on our truck so we can tow a boat with us.

Norfolk is correct on the generator. If you are off grid at a free army Corp engineer camp, you'll need a 2000 watt, 2400 watt peak generator to fire the single a/c unit in a 20/25 footer. I still have my Yamaha. It is sad, but you need to chain it in your truck or mount it to the hitch with different size bolts to confuse a criminal. If you are planning on exploring for the day, put a 20' vinyl coated cable between a pair of the wheels, so if anybody hooks to it, they will lock up and skid. A generic pic of my generator. I just spliced in 2 shut offs in the fuel line so I could hook it up to a portable plastic boat gas tank. If you don't, depending on what you're doing, plan on filling the gas tank ever 4-6 hours. Hands down rv. Way more relaxing. Plus your house is on wheels. Weather, bugs, heat, cold. Doesn’t matter.

Boat = bust out another thousand dollars.
Boats are the biggest money pit you can get. Bugs, weather, other drunkin boaters, teens. Putting it in and out, storage, maintenance, new covers and interior every 5-8 years, fuel prices, shoddy insurance, trailer storage, paying to have it waxed 4 times a year, all the random parts that break every time you use it.

We have 11 boats, a 10’ jet tender, consoles, ski boats, pontoon, bass, a 60, 74, and 80. All of them are a pita.

You want to relax? Get a rv or cabin!
