Ok, hear me out. I have a 315 gallon DT with a Giessman Spectra fixture (MH + T5). UV can mess with bourbon/wine. Would you put a nice bourbon collection in the same room, about 6 feet away from the tank in a corner?I’m worried about the light spillover messing up my Pappy’s. . Anyone as mental as me and thought of this?

I don't think that light spill will hurt fine whisky ;-) Can you move the tank much closer to the bar so we can see it ;-)

I’d love to give advice but I’d honestly have to taste them all to give you a good answer on the impact.

Jokes aside I’d assume that if it’s a decent distance from the direct light spillover area it would be ok. If not then we shouldn’t sit near our tanks either!

If it was sitting in direct sunlight all the time, I might worry about it depending on how empty the bottle is.

I hear those corks can leak something horrible though...stuff just magically disappears. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

Meh most of my collection sits on open shelves. Most of my collection is opened ;)

But the larger question is why would it sit long enough to allow UV to degrade it. Bourbon is for drinking, not collecting dust on a shelf. What good is a bottle of unobtanium if it just sits? If it is that valuable that you are not going to open it and drink it, then it should be in a safe with insurance.

The $5,000 limited bottle of Elmer and a $85 bottle from the package store don't look any different... so lock the $5,000 bottle away if it truly is an investment. Otherwise, open it and enjoy it.

Anyway - UVA - UVB and UVC...
The fixture is not doing anything significant below 380nm
So the most damaging UVB and UVC wavelengths are not present.
UVA is lower energy and takes a lot of exposure...

The glass bottle itself is going to absorb large portion of the UVBand UVB if present and a fair amount of the UVA.

So the sun? Maybe something to worry about in direct constant exposure.
Your aquarium LEDs... not so much.
MH Bulbs with direct daily exposure and no glass shields -- maybe, but still not likely.

If it's for drinking I think you'll be fine. Assumption it'll be finished before it really does anything. :grinning-squinting-face:

Wow, thanks for the info. Here is a pic, back left corner past the messy desk is where the shelf will go. Limited exposure so I agree we are good.
And, I 100% agree on it’s for drinking. Although I do have a couple bottles of Pappy and a GTS, that I am saving for special days aka when kids graduate college, marriages, etc. so those will sit for many years still.

Doesn’t high end hooch come in amber bottles for this reason?

Have several friends that are collectors, far larger collections than myself. Visiting one of them toward end of Covid, we had a friend of a friend in tow.

Mind you, this guy we are visiting has shelves full of unobtanium and amazing bourbons.

Tag along, not recognizing the ultra rarity of much of the stuff in front of him, some of which we are trying says:

“Do you have any Pappy, I am told it is the absolute best”

Before Any of us could explain that there are other much rarer bourbons in front of him, the host grabs a very rare bottle of 23 from a shelf, cracks it open and hands it to the guy. He looks at all of us puzzled and clearly with many questions — and before he can ask for a glass of speak a word, the host says “when somebody hands you an open bottle, you drink. You don’t wait for a glass”.

“Umm wow umm how much did that bottle cost?”

“Don’t worry about that, you wanted pappy, drink the pappy and pass it along… bourbon is for drinking”. And with that we passed a rather rare bottle of 23 around until it was mostly gone. I never talked to the guy again, but imagine he looked up the year of that bottle and realized that he slugged down a few thousand worth himself….

LEDs are worse at generating UV and would be even less of a problem, but if you're not running specifically UV T5s, l think the total UV output will be very low. There is also some natural UV attenuation through glass, so the bottle itself and any glass in front of it would add additional modest protection.

Unless you're producing shorter wavelength UV than, for example, a blacklight bulb, I doubt there would even be an effect at high doses, and if you were generating those deeper UV wavelengths, the light wouldn't be really good for corals nor all that safe to people sharing the room with it (you'd have the possibility of sunburn indoors.)

You’re old school running halides! What about adding a canopy? I’ve never run a tank without one.

Even a floating canopy would eliminate light spillage.
