Brand New 8 gallon bio cube

It went all the way up to 8"... but I though that was a bit overkill and cut it off at 2"... because some HUGE tanks run 2" drains.

I helped build a concrete tank with 6x6" drains in the mid 90's That was insane. It used 12 swimming pool sand filters. ;Wideyed

I was right...happy dance! Thanks @Robin Haselden and @dantimdad! Btw...the PVC lot listed on R2R...I got it because Andrew fell in love with the ball valves. One is 1"and one is 3/4"... I was hoping I could use those.
Ok, valves are my thing. It's how I have big arms and chest while being simultaneously fat and lazy. I work at a power plant that turns water into steam that spins a turbine and generator... we have more valves out here than you can shake a stick at. Some valves so small you can fit the whole thing in your hand and some so big you can walk thru them.

Ball valves work really well for return plumbing. Quick, easy shut off... just once every now and then during maintenance when the pump is off... actually turn it. They can get sort of stiff if they aren't moved often. Like me.

Gate valves are for regulating flow on a drain. They offer more precise flow control at the expense of being able to open and close them quickly.

Use a gate valve on your drain, and a ball valve on your return. You'll be able to get your drain silent (happy husband happy (nothing rhymes with husband)) and that would be nearly impossible with a ball valve.

Those concrete tanks are crazy cool. I still prefer glass, being able to see in from all around.

mines quiet with a ball valve.. mainly because i couldnt find a gate valve. LOL

Not impossible to do, just really hard to get precise water flow. Move it just a touch and the flow changes so much. It's also hard to move them just a small amount. Wont move won't move wont move, too far... They also aren't designed for constant metering of flow. It wears out the seats in the valve. Likely not an issue with a drain on an aquarium tho.

It'll work, it's just WAY easier with a gate valve.

you know your stuff! Ive noticed this. where can one buy a 1" gate valve?

10 years in a power plant turning valves for a living.... a ball valve is called that because the inside is literally a ball with a hole drilled in it. Turn it so the hole lines up and it's open. Turn it 90° and its closed. A gate valve looks like a guillotine. The valve raises and lowers to increase or decrease flow.

Best one you can get is actually on BRS's website. Spears gate valve. Amazon has some cheap ones but the packing(seal around the stem of the valve, below the handle) will most likely leak on you.

I'm going to use those to control flow. Ball valves for jic shut off.

so the $30 brs gate valve is bet choice

That is a centerpiece.
Yea that is epic man. My LFS has had a purple one for $100 for a year, not sure why no one has bought it. Maybe I’ll look into it!

He wants the gate valve handles black or grey.
Hmm, mine is gray with a red/orange handle but they make this stuff in an aerosol can that is specifically designed to change the color of things...

Ok @Robin Haselden you are gonna have to talk us through this. We've done kitchen/bath plumbing. Andrew wants to plumb this. He CAN do it. I will just need help with what order things go in to make it work the best. Quiet. I'd prefer to use threaded so things can be replaced if need be. You can tell me the parts that will most likely fail.

That's what is going on... I was wondering why it was so slow. WWC always crashes the site when they do a live sale.
I would join in on the being upset at the WWC live sale but I came out of it 6 pieces so I guess I can't gripe.
