I walk into my basement last week, to see my 65 gallon Reef tank totally cloudy, with water pouring down the ATI T5 fixture into my tank.
There was water on the floor too.
Suddenly, I realized, I can hear my wife plunging the toilet above the tank in the guest bathroom. It overflowed, ran through the floor, and into my tank. Based on the sump height and the water on the floor, I'd estimate at least 8 oz of human feces laden water make its way into my SPS dominant Reef tank. (I went upstairs and saw the water.......it was nearly black with crap.)
I froze, and started to think............WHAT IN GOD's NAME DO I DO?
The skimmer was overflowing........the corals looked like they started to close up, and the tank looked just like.......!!!!!
I immediately thought, run as much carbon as I can ! I took a large filter sock, filled it with BRS Lignite Carbon (because Rox .08 goes through the mesh)........Only in a panic do you realize how dirty the carbon is.....it took a solid 10 minutes of washing to get the water to run clear. In the sump it went.
Then I took out the BRS dual media reactor and filled both chambers with Rox .8 carbon, and got that running.
I had about 25 gallons of RO/DI water in a Rubbermaid can, but it was way too cold, probably 63 degrees. I turned on the RO/DI knowing it would fill the barrel with ~40 gallons by the next day. I put in the appropriate salt, turned on the heater and knew I wouldn't have sufficiently heated Salt water to do a water change, until the following night. (plus I work until 6PM)
The next morning I looked at the tank, with the lights still out, and it looked like it had cleared up somewhat, but really couldn't assess the damage until that night.
During the day, I kept looking at the tank with my Wifi camera and it didn't look like it was crashing, and the fish looked OK.
By the time I got home, the tank looked great ! It was crystal clear, all corals, especially the SPS, looked good.........THANK GOD.
I finally did a 25% water change today, and realized just how lucky I was.
I never, ever , thought my tank would have to endure the filtration of human feces !!!
Well, that's it. I'll do another 25% water change next weekend, but it looks like she survived. It fact, the SPS corals have the best polyp extension, ever !
