Thanks guys. I have serious problems to tune the skimmer properly. I've opened a thread on general equipment but I couldnt find a solution. Probably it's oversized for my tank... I will keep you updated if the razor addition makes any difference :D thanks a lot, if you have some spare time could you check the skimmer thread? Thanks again guys

I do not have any idea what kind of skimmer that you have, but in my experience, if a skimmer will not tune after experienced people tried it all, then it is not a good skimmer. Hope that you get it figured out. This is not always true of skimmers where you supply your own pump.

If you want these folks to help, then post a link for easy access.

The skimmer is a Coralbox d500 plus.
It s a cheap skimmer so I don't expect it to be perfect, but recently I'm wondering if the bad tuning of the skimmer could be the cause of some brown sps. I could have high dom but low po4 and no3. I have no way to measure that unfortunately (Dom).

Well, typically with acropora, you have nice coloration and slower growth or brownish coloration and more rapid growth.

Do you feel the colony is growing? If so, how rapidly?

Great question. It is growing for sure, and it's the biggest colony I've got right now. So probably I'm in the second case. Do you think it could be too much organics?

Actually it looks like this one for the coloration, but the coralites are a lot more similar to acropora valida!

Validas radials are a lot more apressed and have much smaller openings. Also yours shows the radials are arranged in a somewhat uniform line
Pretty confident its not a valida

rosaria is a much closer in morphology, loripes is another possibility as the two are difficult to distinguish from eachother.

Also doesn't look bleached to me, looks beautiful.

Where are you seeing uniform lined radials on his colony? Some better pics of this colony would be great. I am seeing the classic tricolor look, green base with bright green polyps and purple tips. Although that’s not an I’d method I just haven’t seen any Rosaria with these colors.
I have seen people grow the true Tyree tricolor valida and it gets tiny branches. Where I have got wild and mariculture that grow nice thick branches with much larger pronounced coralites.
I am not trying to argue with you just trying to learn how to better look at acros. I am no expert :)

not perfect rows, but more of a broken lines. The distinguishing point is more so the radial structure, larger openings in particular on both radial and axial corallites, radials also dont have that "stuffed pocket" swollen appearance that validas usually has.


you were on the right track when you mentioned loripes like morphology on its growth edge earlier in the thread.

just here to get a lesson,successful sps grower, freak ,3 decades,following,this as such i am old school,would prob rip me apart for my methods,not adding ,learning,just have to comment ,to stay notified ,here "was " my tank in july 2019:)

My colony looked just like this. Every Rosaria I have seen has a much higher amount of coralites especially near the tips and they are always round and normally cluster at the tips which I don’t see happening on the op’s colony.
I think the curved tips on the edges of the colony are just new branches receiving more flow or something.

Im not sure what similarities you are seeing between ops coral and your old piece, pretty btw!

Here is what Im seeing,
your coral has radial corallites of mixed sizes, some are so apressed they dont protrude at all and appear flush the the sides of the branchlets, both axial and radial corallites have much smaller openings.
The radials on OPs coral are all similar sized, remember not to confuse incipient axials with radials
Notice also how many upright branchlets in the center of OPs colony are naked of radial corallites on one side, on valida this only occurs on the underside of branches/underneath thr colony.
the structure of OPs corals' axial and incipient axial corallites tips are fairly rounded and some are almost "puffy" looking, like a granny, valida usually taper a bit more and have less smooth edges at the openings

Those are the things that I am seeing which are making me very doubtful of this being valida and still guessing its a rosaria or loripes.

I dont have a degree in coral taxonomy, so Im certainly not an expert either.

Man thank you for explaining it in depth. I see what your looking at now. And the last picture is easier to see but maybe I need a computer because they are all really blurry.
Loripes and rosaria are not really grown out as often as the more common corals for some reason so that’s making it hard for me to learn about some species since they do look different in the wild than how they look aquarium kept.

That looks like battlecorals ponape rainbow rosaria in that picture.

yeah "smoothies" like loripes, caroliniana, lokani rosaria, lianae, granulosa etc etc just dont get the love like they did back in the day, these days they live in the shadow of the almighty tenuis craze, lol
