Hi there all,

Can anyone please tell me what this is?

I just did a full rip clean reboot on my 38-gallon, literally, 100% new everything but equipment with 100% live sand and 100% live rock. It’s been roughly 2ish weeks since the reboot.

My plan is to let this thing ride. Don’t know for how long, but long enough to have a clear, clean, beautiful, healthy-looking tank before I add anything beyond the little bit I already have and what came in on the rocks. Problem is, everything is being smothered by this and some green algae. It’s the brownish, spider-webby junk on the glass and everything else.

What is this? Cyano, maybe? Is this just one of the ‘ugly’ phases?

looks like dinos. Get a cheap microscope to confirm (I attached URL). Its what I used. A rip clean is usually a massive disturbance in an environment. Also see if this stuff fades when the light goes out, thats a good indicator that it is likely dinos.

I just ordered the microscope; it will be here tomorrow, thank you for the link!

I will do my biweekly water change and scrape/toothbrush/siphon as much as the junk out as I can, but is there anything else I can do? I’m pretty sure nothing eats dinos, but what about the potential worm?

I’m not sure about the worms, but if you confirm that it is dinos and what type, raising nutrients, not doing water changes, feeding heavier, reducing light cycle, and introducing some more LR and some phyto will be your best bet. If you have Amohidinium or prorocentrum then you can also silicate dose

Some wrasses will eat worms like the maleranus wrasse, my twin spot wrasse loves little inverts like those

As of now, my game plan is to raise the temp to 82, reduce the photoperiod drastically, and be ready to do a large water change to control the potential bacterial bloom if one presents. Other than that, I will do what I can to manually remove the gunk on Sunday, and I will try to get a positive ID on what this actually is tomorrow since my microscope should be here tonight.

Hopefully this works, fingers crossed!
