I know this is a big mystery.. at least I have not heard of anyone solving it yet. One thing I have noticed with my BTAs if I don't feed them for a week or so they lose their bubbles and stretch out. As soon as I give them some shrimp or coral food they plump right up and get their bubbles back. The more food I give them the more inflated the bubbles seem to be.

Wondering if anyone else has noticed a similar pattern.

I know this is an old thread, but makes no difference with mine.

It used to be bigger and had bubbles, but it was on back of rock and I couldn't see it very well.

Eventually, I redid my aquascape and Its staying perfectly in the middle of aquascape, but hasn't had bubbles or expanded as big as it once was.

It is a black widow bta, I've had a year or longer. Has never split either.

My guess? The bubbles lose their familiar shape and actively stretch out looking for more food. Albeit, it's not very far, but every little bit helps! Again, just a guess.
