Bubbling SPS disease

I've seen something similar with a frag of leptastrea in my tank. Some of the bubbles got pretty big, ended up bursting on their own..followed by tissue loss and now regrowing over the dead patches. This photo was from a few months ago. SPS remain unaffected.

Pretty much what my pc rainbow did! It won’t grow now it only bases out… I just clipped the top off to see wha happens if it will grow a new shoot or just skin over and bubble.

Please let me know how this goes. I was cleaning of my nuisance "gray stuff" blasting with a powerhead and hit the acro with it on accident, once I did I went ahead and busted the bubbles with it but they are back. No side effects with other corals getting it, yet.... That was over a week ago.

I’d implore some of you with this issue to try a small daily dose of a potassium iodide additive to see if there’s any effect. Iodide is theorized to have antioxidative properties in the tissues of corals and help with the effects of intense lighting. At the very least it can’t hurt anything.

I recently started dosing potassium iodide to my system daily and noticed an instant turn around in my montipora colonies and cyphastrea. In several days it went from stn to growth and better color. Also increased growth and color in some of my Acropora colonies over the past several weeks.

Well I recently got an icp result back and my tank is actually too high in potassium and was low in iodine. I have corrected the iodine per recommendation. This icp results was received about two weeks before I noticed the bubble.

Wow, same with me. I had an ICP test done in Nov. that showed low Iodine at 40 ug/l. Started dosing and got another one done in late December and it was at 144 ug/l. So I obviously overdosed what I was using (brightwell iodion)... This could have been one of those "point in time" high levels considering I had recently started dosing, so I am not overly concerned with consistent toxic levels at this point. With that said, it hasn't done anything for my acro.

Haven’t heard that… mine all went away finally and I’ll never know why I had it or how it went away lol.. I still to this day dose 2 drops a day of lugols

Did everything start growing again? I think you were having issues with your PC Rainbow...

Yes everything is growing like crazy! Yeah my pc rainbow was bad! You can the new shoots it was bubbled and stunted for a good 6 months.

Certainly that would be the easy fix so I hope so. Mg is at 1380, Ca at 450, and Alk at 8.6. If anything, I've had a rise in Alk but again this has been going on slowly for a long time (6 months or more).

Having gone through this. It’s not that. There was no fix. I battled it for 1.5 years. Tenuis seem highly susceptible, occasionally others would mimic and stop growing or die outright.

Sorry I don’t have a solution and don’t believe there is one at this time.

No one has any idea what’s causing this, only speculation. Don’t race to change stuff cause you will cause more harm to your healthy coral, for what is at best a general anecdote.

So here I am again. A year later, in a new tank that’s thriving, with some of the same pieces as the tank that had the neoplasia last year. It’s back on 10 pieces or so.

Last year the bubbling seemed to start with regular dosing of brightwell aminos and zeo food. I was also carbon dosing lightly.
This year I noticed that it began again when I started feeding the concoction regularly which im sure is rich in amino acids.
First I noticed the strange looking tulip polyps, then bulbous growth, and finally the warted up skin.

This potential has been in my tank since I had so many of these neoplasia looking corals in here that have recovered since last year. 2 common denominators are the amino feedings and carbon dosing. I stopped both last year and in 6 months everything fully recovered. Going to do the same. Running a large uv just to see if it helps

Mine is completely gone and my tank is thriving… I haven’t changed anything that I’m aware of and I dose lots of zeofood and zeobak and still carbon dose with bacto balance.

Honestly don’t know… my growth was zero to none at the time but since my tank stabilized and everything started growing it seems to have all worked it’s self out… I really wish I had the answer or anyone to have it so we know next time! Here’s my pc rainbow that was bouncing like crazy lol…

Pc rainbow is a magnet for this growth. Last year I had it so bad on a frag of it that I was popping the bubbles with a syringe. It has recovered but the growth has been slow since. Color is good but it’s getting the weird growth again. Very annoying. If I put it in a friends system it clears up fast. So many pieces are growing crazy fast in the system with peak color. This is extremely aggravating

I still have it on several frags but my PC has recovered and I am now getting some decent growth. Like Troylee said, I think it is stability. I think my tank if finally finding that balance. I was always fighting high nitrates and now I am constantly around 7-10. PO4 has been in the upper .2-.3 and now is between.1 and .2. I also use my version of the concoction and have been dosing and feeding heavily with amino Just to keep my NO3 up. I don’t think anyone knows what causes it but I do know it hasn’t killed one of my corals…. Yet…. I have learned to live with it. My tank is right at 1.5 years old.

Well I might have an explanation as to why this bubbling growth started again. Thanks to @Sabellafella at pieces of the ocean we discovered that my salinity was low! I have a cheaper refractometer that I calibrate before each use with 2 different bottle of 35ppt solution. This wasn't enough. It's still off. My salinity according to Pieces of the Ocean was 1.022. I got my ICP test result back from Fauna Marine and it said It was even lower 1.020.

Amazing to me the tank is still doing well. Colors are very good, however, there are more stunted pieces than I am used to having, and obviously the blistering started. If this tissue disease is from a type of stress, correcting salinity should help. I'll report back. FYI I used the same refractometer last year when I had the bubbling issue back then.

After almost 30 years in the hobby there is always something to learn. I put all of my faith in one cheap device. Could have lost the tank for an easy correction. I will now be checking salinity with a few devices to ensure accuracy. Will be using a VeeGee STX-3 refractometer, Hanna salinity checker, and tropic marin hydrometer each time. If you have this bubbling problem on your sps, double check your measure with another device, a shop, or a fellow reefer. BTW because of this I discovered that my friends tank was low too lol @delv2323
