Bulkhead fitting help

I am hooking up my first tank with internal bulkheads instead of overflow and am having trouble with the fittings that go in the bulkheads. I used threaded 90's and used thread tape but I am still getting a leak. Anyone experienced this before?

Try some pipe dope, its a paste

Will it work if I cant remove the fittings and have to just apply it to the outside?

It has to go on the threads.

Ok, sounds like either way ill have to cut the pipe below. Ill just add a union so theres no more cutting.
