Calaustrea candy cane coral branching.. sideways?

I know Candy canes multiply by splitting. Point is, mine is splitting but also growing some kind of skeletal spike out of the side. The spike has no flesh on it so it got me worried. What could this be?

Photo might not show it that well but the red encircled bit is growing like a spike. I think it increases a single milimeter per 2 says.

Got this cane for like 2 weeks.

I have one that developed a spike thing like that too but it never developed into anything more so far and it's been months
