I have had a calcium reactor running for a few years now. about every 6 months I have been rinsing the silt from my media in a strainer and adding it back to the reactor... I add media about every month as it stands... ive been reading lately that people recommend throwing the media away at certain intervals and starting fresh. what is the benefit to this over rinsing it and continue to use the media? seems like a waste because some of that media wont be that old.... plus the size of my reactor it would be a rather large waste of media..

As long as the media is large enough to not compact and restrict flow, you should be able to keep using it.

In case you Face the Situation that your reactor can not any longer deliver the amount of Calcium-carbonates your tank consumes,
Then Refilling with new granulate should raise the efficiency of the reactor.
