Can fish get sick from food?

Rotten food is a stressor on multiple fronts, less nutrients, it adversely affects the probiotic fauna of the fish's digestive tract,

Come on we’re not really taking about feeding rotten food, as I said in previous post I went to one extreme, But do you really know this? And if so can you please reference your source?

If you go back to my responses you will notice that I remarked on noticing smell. While not the most scientific way, it is a fairly good indicator of whether food is rancid or not. If it hasn't turned it is possible to still use it.

Is that for refrigerated food or frozen? There are different considerations for the two..

Refrigeration is not sub opimal and extends its viability, freezing even more so.

If you have a nano then yes a small but potential effect on water quality, but do you think the odd cube in big systems is going to have ny impact at all?? I don’t know about your fish but mine spit anything out they don’t like in seconds, and most vertebrates have an inate sense as to what’s edible or not...

Don’t get me wrong I’m not advocating chucking pounds of rotten fish into our tanks, but the odd bit isn’t going to hurt IMO, I don’t feel it’s something we need to obsess over in the big scheme of things.. “a bit of muck makes you stronger” my mums favourite saying as a kid

We’re not discussing the importance of a quality diet, I 100% agree in that and the referenced paper supported that, this thread is all about is food a few hours out of the fridge ok to use... and I’m saying yes it’s ok... the paper you linked says nothing on this subject at all

If you fed nothing but poor quality/ spent food constantly then yes of course it would effect but that isn’t what the OP was asking it’s bout the odd occasion..

You are entirely missing my point food safety recommendations are completely different for frozen and refrigerated food,which one were you talking about?

Yes but it would have to be out for a day or more before it smelt bad enough for you to smell it as bad, again not what the OP was asking

Frozen food can get rancid, which can trigger illness. If the food smells like it has turned, don't feed it.

+1 which has been a big problem lately with silversides and anemones. Just food for though with no pun intended.

Indeed, as the supply chain doesn’t keep frozen food, frozen, it’s a real issue, the freeze thaw freeze cycle really causes cell damage and can cause ammonia issues amongst others..

Not necessarily. Due to the fact that it may have thawed/refrozen previously, it may not take overnight to get rancid, hence the smell test.

Yes, sir. I, unfortunately, had some 4 friends recently lost 4 BTA's because of the thaw/refreeze (to the point of being rancid) silverside thingy...ugh.

I replaced them with BTA's from my tank with the promise of no silversides. It's been ~ a month now and all are well.

we are talking about frozen fish food right? head scratch............i just want to make sure i am hearing what i am hearing meaning are we really talking about throwing fish food out because it has thawed......head scratcher....to the OP i would NOT worry about it unless it went more than a day or two or longer...so as far as hours go.....nothing to discuss IMO...happy reefing

Let's also not forget that vibrio can be transmitted through frozen food (one of the main channels) and it will not only make the fish sick but kill very fast. Re-freezing is generally fine, minus the nutritional loss, but without a lab the smell test is your only imperfect tool. Keep in mind that our re-freezing may be 2nd or 3rd in the chain from the manufacturer to the store etc.

It may be fine, it may not. IF it smells rancid, DON'T feed. If it smells ok, then its probably fine.

Not entirely true. While not all bacteria that affect humans affect fish, some do. Vibrio, peviously mentioned, does adversely affect fish.

I had mysterious deaths of a couple fish,shortly after feeding.
Healthy active wrasses eating & swimming normal, dead w/ in hours of feeding.( Potters wrasse I had for over a year & a radiant wrasse I had for several months) they were aggressive feeders & would eat more than most of the other fish.
Only thing I can think of it being was Vibrio,or some other bacteria/Pathogen in the food.:(
I tossed the batch of frozen foods( blood worms, Spirilina (?)Brine shrimp, fish eggs & LRS) .
Knock on wood no losses like that since .
I still blame the food,even though It wasn't left out or contaminated as far as I know

I have always bought frozen from ebay and it usually takes 2 days to get to me. The packs are sealed inside thick tinfoil but have still thawed out by the time they get to me. Absolutely NEVER had an issue.
