Can a coral this far gone recover? I had an alk spike and most SPS browned out. Some have showed a little recovery but not much. Second question is what is the dark maroon/purple algae. It’s not cyano as it’s hard and encrusted on the rocks.

How long has it been since the alk spike? It can take weeks to months for corals to recover sometimes and it's species and genotype specific. The hard encrusting algae is likely one of the many coraline algae species that can show up.

It’s probably been 2 or 3 months now. It’s all acros. The one in the picture is a Acropora Milipora. Some Montis are showing signs of recovery. Hammer colony and Trumpet colony were not effected.

At this point I'd say you just need to be patient. Keep in mind your system likely saw fluctuations in the microbial processes at the system level and in the individual coral holobionts. Research shows disruptions to reef ecosystems tend to favor the pathogenic microbial processes and Immune responses to pathogenic bacteria can vary at the species/genotype level. The differences you're seeing in the individual responses of your corals is what's to be expected.
