Many ways to skin a cat. Our friend here shared one that doesn't require any more specialized materials.

I certainly believe you on the set time, but that's largely due to the same capillary effect happening with the dust and thinned glue. I disagree on the strength. In my tests glue and dust was not strong enough for me to be comfortable doing large overhangs. Only once the mortar was set was it strong enough for my liking, but I also went pretty extreme with my shapes. I probably wouldn't trust this method by itself either, to be honest.

Speaking of skinning a cat!

Did you know that in Delaware it is illegal to sell the hair of a dog or a cat???

But maybe more relevant to the original discussion (that is becoming slightly heated it appears): did you know that in October of 2024, Santa Cruz County in California became the first jurisdiction IN THE WORLD to ban filtered cigarette sales???

While this method of creating nifty rock structures (whether invented here or previously invented) is pretty neat, I don't recommend utilizing this in Santa Cruz county.

How's that @KrisReef ?

oooh, I love this scape! I love that central point on top that everything meets at.

On a side note; have any of your genicanthus angels turned male yet? I have a singular swallowtail (non japanese) that haven't turned yet; not sure if she will when alone or when.

Yes. I had a larger female turn male with a smaller male already in the tank. The smaller male then developed head spots similar to a female (I guess a sub male coloration?) and they lived together with three other females for a while before the sub male died from unknown causes. Now it's just been the single Watanabe male.

Skip all of the my idea or his idea drama, at the end of the day no one cares who thought of it first. Also skip the technical words describing what kind of a bond it is, again no one cares.

With that said the cigarette filter trick looks to be a good way to bond rocks together. Thx for posting it.

Nah, not detouring, just having fun.

Hey, by the way, to the poster that responded that Cyanoacrylate glue and sand works just as well: as someone who has made 90% of my rockwork from Aragocrete and Cyanoacrylate glue/sand mix - structural materials (such as cotton balls or cigarette filters) does add a LOT of strength. I had to reglue and resand the rockwork in my 8 gallon multiple times to get it to stop falling apart and the Aragocrete sure has a tendency to crumble and become weak after several months in the aquarium.

Good tip on the filters!

Hmm… I’m actually in Santa Cruz county where filtered cigarettes are indeed not sold these days…

However, I do have various types of fiberglass around for boat related projects…. Presumably the method works just as well with an analogue to fiberglass cigarette filters?

It mustve been another commenter in that convo, i just remember one of you had dante the other didnt. It's great to empower community groups with connectivity levels people like me take for granted, and watching as they realise they can tie in from downstairs....for nowt. Anyhoo, rock on.
