Carpet Anemone care tips?

Dancing back and forth between an LTA or carpet anemone for my tank. I found a carpet I really like, but have never kept anything beyond a few rose bubble tips (unless a maxi mini I have in the tank now counts? Haha).

What are your biggest dos and don’ts with carpets? Would you recommend one? If I get one from a local reefer is it likely to be hardier or not?

I was looking to change out my BTA for a carpet and discovered that my maroons will not host in a carper and my even eat the maroon clowns.

Well technically maxi mins are carpets as they are in the stichodactyla family. As soon as we move in january we are turning our 70G reef into a stichodactyla only tank with 30 maxis and a single large gig. :)

DO: find a healthy specimen that is not deflated or with a gaping mouth. (getting one from a local reefer out of their display is a good way to find a healthy specimen over ordering online or from a LFS)
DO: have on hand the medication needed in case you need to treat for bacterial infections (many have these infections)

DON'Tt: don't mix anemone types : IE don't keep the bubble tips in with the carpet, the carpet will DESTROY the btas if he ever walks near them.
DON'T: i would advise AGAINST keeping any other fish in the system besides anemonefish like clowns since carpets are known to eat fish (sometimes even eating clowns) you can also keep other symbiotes like sexy shrimp and porcelain crabs

Ideal water parameters, moderate water flow, intense light. Carpets grow large so make sure you have a big enough tank. We are talking dinner plate size. Don’t have coral in your tank. They possess a power sting to neighboring corals and anemones and fish other than certain Clowns. Make sure to feed them meaty foods. Do have optimal filtration and be prepared to do weekly water changes.

Funny you mentioned the maroons @jsker because that’s specifically the clown I want haha.

@glassmunkey I’ve been thinking I’ll just do clowns if I were to go with a carpet. I have a drop-off tank so it would be heavily sectioned off from a lot of the corals/ other inhabitants as well. If I were to put a bubble tip at the top section of the tank making there almost no chance of the two meeting, do you think there’d still be an issue? Fish wise, I only have two chromis in the system currently.

Well, ended up ordering 4 mini maxi carpets and two flower anemones for myself today (Merry Christmas to me). I’ll go with something else for the clowns I think since I’d rather not have the maroons I buy become an expensive lunch haha.
