Now I will learn you a new thing. When you start with a brand new probe - my experiences is that it is rather unstable the first weeks and the probe many times needs to be recalibrated after 2 - 3 weeks. Before you do anything else - recalibrate the probe. After that you know that you can rely on the readings.

The rise of the pH when you two was away correspond to the same rise (of around 0.1 - 0.2) of average pH when me and my wife is away. But your rise of 0.2 unit indicate that you have more gas exchanging through your open water surface compared with the skimmer. When I changed to outdoor air - the normal dip if we are at home is around 0.1.

I wonder why the probes act weird at first.

My plan was to not do anything for the first few months. I have seen too many people chase numbers, I just found it interesting to see science in action.

My skimmer is still breaking back in, so it isn't pulling in a ton of air yet, airline pretty restricted.

Once I feel like I am ready to really dive into pH I will recalibrate and see what is going on.

Here in Sweden - 20 km north of Gothenburg but rather clean air - normal CO2 concentration in outside air is around 400 - 410 ppm. This correspond to a pH around 8.15 when CO2 level in water and air is in equilibrium. Near a large airport and close to heavy traffic - the average CO2 level in the outside air will be higher than 400 ppm.

Interesting. I fly a lot and know that I can leave my driveway and be at the delta drop off lane in 7 minutes haha.

Yeah, I was not freaking out or stressing about it, I just think it is cool to see science in action. Reading about it is one thing, but seeing it actually affect your tank is still so cool to me... I love learning things.

Disclaimer- Please don't flame me on this thread because of what I am about to describe. Everything I am about to lay out has been thoughtfully considered.

I started the Lasse Method 3 weeks ago, and everything has been progressing nicely. I am getting coloration on my rocks, my Goby is doing well, and my GSP is thriving and growing. That being said, I am about a week out from where one would conventionally add another fish. The Lasse Method calls for an active fish, although the Goby is active for the species, if I did it again I would go with a more active fish.

Lasse is really good with one thing in particular, and it is making you think, as opposed to following a hard set of rules. With that in mind I began to think. I realized that instead of adding a bigger fish that is active right at the 4 week mark, that I maybe should introduce some juveniles that will slowly add to the bioload tank as they grow. Essentially this sets up a situation where my tank matures with the fish.

I also knew that I would not have my QT available for several months, but I did not want to stall the progression of my main tank. This lead me to make the decision to get some fish straight from Sustainable Aquatics (through my LFS) and add them directly to the DT. I went with some really tiny Wyoming White Clowns. The idea here is to add some known healthy fish from a breeder and let their bioload increase as the tank matures. Lasse has stated that he does not QT, but selects fish carefully. I plan to QT for other additions, but here my thinking directed me toward this route.

Please do not attack me for adding fish so early. I have thought through the consequences of this decision. One thing that is just as important as being successful in this hobby to me is learning along the way. From my research, I believe that this will be a successful addition. However, either way it is a learning experience. Above all I consider the health of the animals, and I do not think I am doing anything here that will negatively affect my livestock. In the meantime, look how cute these guys are acclimating.

It is funny to watch these guys rub all over each other and try to host in the corner of the specimen container lol.
