Hello I am new to this hobby and to R2R I have tried to grow chaeto several times and every time it dies off in a couple weeks any suggestions .

Welcome! Chaeto can be tricky. As Peace River mentioned, could be lighting, nutrients or a number of other issues. What is parameters, how old is your tank, what light are you using?

Hello!

Maybe try chaetogro if you are not already dosing trace elements. I have found it to work wonders with chaeto in people's refugiums.

I’ve had the same problems in the past. I’ve found that you need adequate lighting, a detectable level of nutrients, and I’ve found that dosing Chaeto-Gro helps a lot. I’ve also found it best to wait until the tank is a good six months old before trying to grow it. I’ve had no problem growing caulerpa in newer tanks, but have found chaeto does better in more established tanks.

When I see threads like this I have to ask what are you trying to accomplish. Cheato should be self regulating, It's usually used as a nutrient export. Nutrients are high, the cheato grows fast, low and it stops. Today's tanks can be low to no nutrients. Skimmers and ATS can remove NO3/PO4 very quickly as will a mature tank stocked with corals out-competing the Cheato.

Thus members start to increase the nutrients to get the cheato to grow which makes no sense since they were seeking to remove nutrients and shifted focus on growing algae. ???


Before anyone can help you, start with posting your NO3/PO4 numbers and what test kits are being used. Also what lights (although I grow forests of the stuff with cheap plant LEDs).

Thank you everyone it is great to be apart of this reefing family. My 180 is about 2 years old my Alk is 8.5-9 Cal is 425 Salfert Po4 o Hanna Uln checker No3 o Hanna checker what a pain to use. My problém is I Have a green wirere algea that I cant seem to get rid of ,I thought if I started some chaeto it might try and out compete my bad algea my light is a 50 watt led plant light.
