Hello reefers,
So I purchased my new dosing pump for my tank, I currently have a 65 gallon tank and a 20 gallon sump, this month makes my full first year with this tank and I tell you I've been through hell when battling with algae and keeping my parameters stable, so I finally bought my new doser (jebao auto dosing pump) . I have been super lazy with always checking my parameters and have been doing water changes every two weeks. I've been using Red Sea coral pro salt and been very happy with the outcome.
How I defeated algae growth was by feeding less, keeping a 9 hr light schedule, bigger clean up crew especially buying blue legged crabs. I also think using the new salt made it happen as well.
I lost a ton of zoas as well. I had a big huge pox infection and unfortunately I am learning as I go so I used coral rx to dip them and that didn't help. So unfortunately I lost about 6 different types of colonies.
Now I have a ton of space in my tank so I decided to go sps but before I can go full on sps I decided to buy two of them and see how they do. I normally keep softies just because they are easier to keep for a newbie.
I just did my water change yesterday and didn't test but I am going to test as I post this and see what my numbers are. Now I know that for me to start my dosing pump I need to find out how much calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium I'm loosing per day.
Questions:
I got the calcium, alkalinity and magnesium mix all done but I mixed it about 10 months ago and haven't used it, they are just sitting inside the jugs. Can I just use them or should I mix a whole new batch fowith each?
the more sps I keep the more calc, mag, alk it will consume?
As for the carbon, I see a ton of people get a lot of growth in their tanks by not using it, is it good to not run carbon while keeping sps?
I have a two part reactor running carbon and GFO.
These are the corals I keep.
The fishes I keep
All the fish I have I've had them since starting this tank so about a year and haven't lost any so far.
