Chemetrics or Mardel, which should I trust?

Wow that is a lot to digest. Great work bringing it all together. I’m with you - can’t read the API. Wonder if BRS would consider taking this on??

That's a great idea! Humblefish said in the other thread that he was going to test every test kit he could find. My issue is obtaining a known sample concentration to test. Nobody knows the dosage of Coppersafe it takes to create a particular ppm in saltwater, not even Fritz the maker.

I went ahead posted in the vendor forum under BRS section. I summarized the problem as reading the test results, confusing/incorrect dosing instructions and no reference sample available. I tried to explain the scope of all this but don’t know how successful I was. I did refer them to this forum. Feel free to jump on that post.

I hope I didn't leave this impression. Fritz says that 1.25ml/g will be 1.16 ppm copper. What Fritz won't say is if that level of copper is effective at treating ich or velvet.

I thought they weren't sure on the resulting ppm only that they recommended dosing 1.25 ml/gal. The testing results page you posted stated they dosed to 2 ppm for the tests, but it didn't state what that dosage was. I also thought I read somewhere that they wanted to test with a mass spectrometer to identify resulting ppm for the standard dose.

I had to go back to the email exchange I had back with them. They did do their testing at 2ppm but this was included in the email exchange. Not sure how I had the 1.16 in my head.... too many margarita's...

"At this time our best recommendation is either using a Hach Total copper test kit or simply following the label instructions. Mathematically, the Coppersafe formula should yield a concentration of 1.17 to 1.18ppm of Total copper in the water (which is a safe treatment level due to our unique chelating agent)."

So Brew - you’re saying best to just follow dosing instructions on bottle?

No, I'm not. Notice they say that it is a "safe treatment level". It does not say it is an effective treatment level.

I recommend taking 1 gallon of salt water and mixing 1.6ml of coppersafe into it. Test it and try to remember that color. This is your new minimum. Then, add an additional 0.5ml to it and test again. This is your new maximum. Anything in between the two should be good.

Thanks Brew.

I think too many margaritas is the best SOLUTION I've heard.
