It looks like the sealant on that seam is a different color than the others? To me, that would imply a repair had been attempted before. If the person who sold you the tank had done that work, my guess is that it either didn't work, or they were worried it would fail.

Use some wet dry sand paper to round off the sharp edge and fill it outside.

How thick is the glass, how deep (far from the top of the tank) is this chip?

The damage doesn't look to be that significant, to my eyes.

I like to think I have fairly high tolerance for risk. I've been called crazy and even stupid for doing some of the things I have done and occasionally injuries have happened. I wouldn't fill that tank in my house. Just being damaged in a seam is bad enough but it looks like part of the silicone seam is missing. I've seen used glass tanks with no damage leak after being moved.

I'm not like my friend above, I'm quite a bit more risk adverse, and the only way I'd use this tank is fill it outside, and monitor for a month or more.

Even then I'm not sure I'd actually use it.

Thick glass is your friend. I would still fill it outside, but I don't think this tank will fail from this damage.

It was a crashed tank, previous owner neglected it. Calcium carbonate buildup on both sides and back glass. I really want to give it a successful rebirth with much more room than my 50 breeder for corals. A 180-200 tank is in the future but not in current budget. It was filled with fresh water across town before it arrived. I may just fill it and pray that it’s best reef days are ahead.
