Chromis,schooling fish,not really..

Good evening guys :) it's me again
I made some research on Chromis fish,and I found that people who tried to school some of them,usually fail due that they are aggressive in their own kind..
Being a freshwater aquarium keeper since 7 years. I know that schooling fish if they are not by a minimum number,they will turn aggressive between each other.. When they are more like 10 as a minimum the aggressivity will neutralize..

What do you think? What is for example : for my 120g I introduced 15 chromis?

Chromis will school in the wild for protection purposes, they school for a bit in captivity, but only until they realize there are no threats. At that point, they turn on each other until there are only 2 left.

You need some big looking hungry fish to keep them schooling. But then again you need to keep added some to replace the ones the big looking hungry fish eats.
The only reason they school is for protection without the fear of becoming someone's diner there is no motivation/need to school.

Honestly, you need to take into consideration that the size of most tanks confine them to a relatively small area especially comparing it to the ocean. They in my opinion are schooling all the time. I am sure in the wild, when they are a couple feet from each other we still see it as schooling, yet in our tanks they aren't when they go anymore than a few inches. Sure, of course its not like neon or rummynose tetras that are tightly packed together.

Chromis need to be well fed and require multiple feedings per day or you will get the typical outcome of them killing eachother off. I have had success with them and honestly love them as a fish that is there, pretty and active yet doesn't take away from showcase fish and coral. They are one of my favorites.

I agree. Youd have to have quite a few of them to keep them together. They are quite the hit and miss fish, ive had 6 at one time, now none. Id say if your going with a Chromis, id definately get the peaceful ones and not the semi aggressive.

I think 15 would look nice, but you may not want to add much more into there. I am looking to do a group of about 20 in my 180.

Thank you reefing madness for your reply! I actually now have 5,4 schooling together,and one big one at the bottom of the tank for the 4th day,not eating no sign of any disease.. he might be out of the team.. no idea..

Have 3 at the moment and don't notice any aggression. Keep in mind theyre in a 180 with an evil female clown which might make them tolerate eachother.. But I firmly believe in the multiple feedings if possible. I also think once you expand their numbers to a certain point it may be hard for a single one to get bullied to death.

I will let it be known how it goes after I end up adding much more to the group. First I have to get my Achilles out of QT.

I mean not much more fish in general, for bioload reasons of course. Merely a suggestion of course that I had to put out there.

Just because hes not showing signs at the moment doesn't mean he doesn't have any unfortunately. I would look into quarantining for now on.

It may also be an issue with acclimation if he is new. LFS's keep their salinity low in their fish stock tanks.

They are only for 4 days in my tank.. I will see if I transfer him to quarantine,might be a good idea!
For the number,I rather add some other fish than adding only Chromis.. But I am looking forward to see what are your results when adding a big group.

Yes, best to do a good deal of research before purchasing fish. I have done spontaneous purchases in both FW and SW.. Never a good idea lol

In the future, ask your LFS what they keep the salinity at. Best to set up a QT day before buying, so your not scrambling around your house with a fish in a bag. Like I have done a few times lol

Actually I do it on spot,in case I fall on a new species that I don't know about it.I google on the ground! take my decision and go ahead,but the information that I have are never enough lol I always go back home to get more information and find lots of surprises..

Its not bad at all.. I cant wait to get my Achilles into my display, but its already been a week and a half I have had him and feels like yesterday I brought him home.
