A good rule of thumb is one clean up crew member per gallon of water, depending on the species. I would look into Astrea's for detial cleaning, Mexican Turbo's for sand bed cleaning and larger jobs, I even consider my Coral Banded Shrimp as part of the CUC, as he scavages for uneaten food. Urchins are another excellent choice for algae control. I am not a huge fan of hermit crabs as they seem to have a high mortality in comparison to the snails. Hope this helps and happy reefing!

In my 29 I have about 20 Astrea, 5-6 Turbo, a Lawnmower Blenny, and the shrimp.

Welcome! I prefer to start small, few snails and crabs and then add as needed.

If you don't have any high dollar coral, I would check out an Emerald Crab as well. A lot of fun to watch and a good cleaner.

It also depends on whether you are rimless or no. I have nitrile snails, do a great job on glass.... cerith and dwarf cerith snails get into places others can't.... sand sifting starfish, gobies! You have so many options. I find that I have grown more fond of snails than the crabs. Better life span.

All the above suggestions are great but keep in mind your other livestock. Live Aquria doe a fairly good job of describing compatibility with everything they sell.

2 turbo
3 astrea
3 cerith
3 nassarius
2 trochus

4-6 blue leg hermit crab

For some reason I see my hermits live longer than my snails
