Cleaning Macros

Is it safe for macros like chaeto to be, so-to-speak, quarantined in tap water? I have heard macros can live in various types of waters. Can chaeto survive brackish quarantine? Basically, can we "clean" chaeto in a way that kills off bad things by hyposalinity? Fish diseases would not survive that, would aiptasia or any other nuisances ?

Basically any fresh water dip on macro algae’s will stress and kill it.

You could certainly leave it by itself after acquiring it for 11 weeks in order to get rid of velvet, ich, and brook. As for other things, I’m not sure.

Most macros should be able to handle a short freshwater dip, but i would suggest using rodi water. :) ~shaun k.

I rinsed mine off in RO/DI and it killed it so definitely freshwater is a no no for me. I just swirl mine around in some saltwater if need be.

I've taken hardy macros (chaeto, G. Hayi, etc.) and rinsed them under the sink for a few seconds. I'm sure it's a no-no for some (I wouldn't do it with Caulerpa or Halimeda, as they have a higher tendency to go sexual) but I've had no issues thus far. However, judging by some other posters, apparently my experience hasn't been the norm.
