Do you have kids and want to get them into corals and ze wonders of the ze sea? Come to Ocean Night!
I am the marine science instructor at Hall High School in West Hartford and the founder of the Hall High Coral Project. The purpose of the Hall High Coral Project is to bring animals, such as corals and reef fish, into the hands of West Hartford students. Our work minimizes the environmental impact of harvesting corals and other animals from the ocean. Students fragment their own livestock in order to trade with and sell to other hobbyists and small businesses across New England. In an effort to share the students’ knowledge and passion for preserving our oceans, the Hall High Coral Project is hosting Ocean Night, a special community event on June 7th, 2019, from 6-9PM at Hall High School. This event coincides with World Ocean Day on June 8th.
The event is for ALL AGES. Ocean Night will feature a screening of “Chasing Coral,” an award-winning documentary that captures the effects of coral bleaching to reefs around the world. There is an exhibition of art produced by students from six West Hartford elementary schools. There will be a kids’ activity room with labs and games all about corals. This night is a STEAM event (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). We have planned a RAFFLE to raise money for our new upgraded coral propagation system, which is projected to become the largest system of its kind in central CT!
The goal of Ocean Night is to spread awareness of coral reef bleaching caused by climate change, which is leading to the collapse of entire ecosystems in our oceans. Although West Hartford is far away from these amazing ecosystems, we are all connected to these coral reefs. Scientists and experts can only do so much; change must come from all of us.
