so can copepods survive/ breed/flourish without dosing phyto or any other additive? or should i just suck it up and go buy some

They can survive without special dosing but what are you trying to achieve out of them ?

I would say it all depends on the age of the tank and available nutrients. Most likely they will thrive quickly and flourish with dosing phyto vs nothing.

well my ultimate goal is for them to sustain a good enough population to eventually keep some type of dragonettee

Then I would start dosing and buying pods to build up the population

i already seeded my tank with pods and they seem to be doing pretty well so far. i’ll get some phyto with my next paycheck
