Coral Crazes Over the Years

Well the reason that became so well known was not only because the efflo sold for $500, but because it died in shipping to the person that paid $500 for it (Steve Weast IIRC). Luckily some was saved so the coral lived on, and still does in various tanks.

No arrive alive guarantee huh? lol I would poop myself a little if I paid $500 on a dead coral

Eh... everything is kind of a blur to me now regarding the exact year, but would say 2 years ago for both. Late '06, early '07.

I remember in the 90's paying $15 retail for a rock covered in ricordia. I was doing acro's in the late 90's and was propagating them shortly after. I never paid more than $50 for a colony and frags rarely sold for more than $20. And they were huge frags by todays standards. I've been doing this for about 12 years now and it is amazing just how much this hobby cycles. I remember getting a few colonies ten to twelve inches across.

Oh don't get me started on the zenia craze. My tank was so full of it I was flushing buckets of it down the toilet every week. Japanese acans and micro's had a turn too.

The most exotic thing I have ever seen in any tank is something I can not even mention. The guy didn't even know what it was.

Around here 5 or 6 years ago anything blue was the rage, blue zoanthids, blue torts, blue zenia....... People paid huge amounts of money for Tubs blue zoos.

man, most of this stuff has been coming in for decades - way before the advent of the internet, and especially before the popularity of reefkeeping websites.

we've seen more "unusual" color combinations more recently as new collection sites are picked, but really all of the popular corals of today have been coming in for a lonnnnnnnnng time. even sps, as has already been stated.

A fully colored blasto colony sold for no more than 20-30 dollars but the pricing dramatically increased b/c they are not very good shippers thus the price increase to compensate for the DOA's.

Acan's indo's where a;lmost impossible to obtain and they had a pricy tag back in the late 80's mid 90's now they are poop compared to Aussie acans.

And do u remember what an indo elegance was worth no matter the color? Well over 300 at any retail storefront that could keep them alive. Now U can get aussie elegance that has a better survival rate for no more than $100 and with ultra colors.

I remember the nice colored Welsi Blasto's in late 2006/early 2007 being about $120 for 2 heads.

BTW, have I mentioned I hate Blasto's? Stupid things all melted away ...

lol seems as if things start to fall apart after a few years back as far as remembering exactly what prices things were. Seems to be an ebb and flow to the popularity of corals.

Oh yeah the good old days too before corals had special names :) pre purple monster.
although I was lucky enough to get a purple monster frag back then from tyree himself.

Not sure who was tossing them :confused:

But yeah, back in like 1990 or so, I got florida rics. Just sold as regular mushroom rocks. Purple mushrooms went for way more at the time.

And THE coral to have even before then was an elegance. They all lived back then, and went for around $60-$80 (that was a lot compare to $15 flower pots :eek: ).

Wonder why the elegances were no problem back then? they were from indonesia right? Same ones people were having problems with lately It is the recent aussie elegances that were proving to be more hardy.
