Coral Crazes Over the Years

Gonna take some of the original gangsters to complete this, but wanted to compile a list of coral crazes and their average price during that year. Why? Not sure, curious I guess. Hopefully start to see a pattern and to see how much corals have gone down in price as they became more available due to propagation.
I'll start with the most recent, as people chime in we can narrow down the average price and year. Let's stick to the big crazes..

Rhyzo-$400

The first Rhizotrichus typus I saw for sale (retail side) was just over $2,000. This was late 2006. The reds and pinks were commonly sold for $1,000 - $1,500 for the next couple years, and the whites and greens would command a price between $400 - $600. Things started to drop dramatically after that when more were brought in.

They were commonly sold for $200 - 250 throughout this year, but I haven't seen much (any) of the bright red ones, mostly the red-pinkish guys. Whites were pretty much the same price, and greens haven't been around at all.

Many times it has nothing to do with propagation (unfortunately) but with how many are brought it (read: flood the market).

Many times it has nothing to do with propagation (unfortunately) but with how many are brought it (read: flood the market).

Propagation has something to do with though, especially with the named ones, but I agree with this statement overall.

it is a dark/vivid red w/ green tips. very nice piece. we bought it from reefdoctormicromussa. he told john it was the nicest one he had seen to date at the time, and i believe teetered on keeping it for himself.

Oh for sure! Chalices in particular you see the price dropping. Remember when the "Hollywood Stunner" commanded higher proces? Now I see people giving it away. Corals like rhizos and Scolys are the one's we see drop dramatically due to increased importation as they're not very "propagatable", efficiently that is.

I vividly remember in 2003/2004 drooling over ungodly priced 3/4" SPS frags like the $500 Efflo and Purple Monster. I was a broke high school student that flipped when I scored a piece of Lime in the Sky from Greg, LOL!

I am assuming the purple hornet and red hornet should make this list....i am pretty sure i saw red hornet going for $255 in november. I cant remember how much it was at its highest though....and the purple hornet broke $300 back when too

Lol this is the stuff I want. Sps's were considered very hard to keep at one point, so when they first started getting imported regularly, they must have commanded quite a premium.

Can't believe I forgot to add these, especially the purple hornet, that was probably the biggest craze of the year. I'm gonna take a guess at the average ppp, please correct me if I'm wrong. remember I am going for an average price here

It's a crazy price for sure, but I am going for individual pieces.

Sps's were considered very hard to keep at one point, so when they first started getting imported regularly, they must have commanded quite a premium.

On the contrary... when they first started coming in they were cheap as nobody wanted them because they were thought to be "unkeepable". That and the fact that they were already, or quickly turned into a gorgeous brown-poop color.

Once people kept them succesfuly, then the real nice pieces coming in cost a pretty penny.

Dendrophyllia use to command a very high per polyp price along with Duncanopsammia. At one point both were $100+ per polyp. Duncans have greatly reduced as have Dendros but not as much.

Makes sense about the sps's. I'm brand new to em..

LOL...

Well the reason that became so well known was not only because the efflo sold for $500, but because it died in shipping to the person that paid $500 for it (Steve Weast IIRC). Luckily some was saved so the coral lived on, and still does in various tanks.

Any idea when the duncans and dendros started coming in at those prices?

Eh... everything is kind of a blur to me now regarding the exact year, but would say 2 years ago for both. Late '06, early '07.
