I need help
It’s been probably over 6 months that I’ve actually posted or been on here, it’s been nearly 6 months since I’ve done a water change, and nearly 6 months since I lost all motivation. I have adhd, so losing motivation on something makes complete sense, but losing motivation and watching your favorite coral die, watching your tank whither away shouldn’t be part of that. I’ve lost my favorite acro, my torch is nearly dead, my gonis, I have no idea where my shrooms are, I lost my favorite Duncan. And I lost that feeling of pride. There is algae everywhere, it’s not clean. And I’m not happy at myself. Everyday I start off the day saying, “today will be the day!” And it wasn’t the day. I go to bed saying “tomorrow will the day!” And turns out it wasn’t the day. I feel horrible since I got a free tank last summer, I came back from junior olympics the past February, saying only a couple more weeks and it’s finally being setup fully(meaning corals and everything are being moved), and it’s just in my room half empty. It breaks me to see my tank like this, to see a gift from somebody like this. I don’t know what to do. If anybody can help me that would be amazing. If you have anything nasty to say, don’t say it.
Thanks for listening and hope you have a nice day!!
I’m nearly tearing writing this, that’s how bad I feel

hi stewy! i wondered what had happened to you! just take it down if its too much for you to manage right now. you can always start again later! it sounds like you just have too much going right now and that is understandable

Oh I’m not going through anything, that’s the thing, and I’m off to college next summer. It would kill me to take it down, but idk at this point, I’ve been thinking about just selling everything, but I’ve put too much time and energy into it for me to actually be serious about that :(
Edit: forgot to say hi!! How have you been smitten?

First, congrats on the Olympics, that's an incredible achievement!

With ADHD getting in the way of life, it's tough. I've been diagnosed with it as well, tried Adderall and it didn't do much. So I kind of manage on my own, although there are other medications my physician prescribed that help. You should talk to your physician if you have one, or your parents or someone else directly in your life who you trust. There are medications that help manage it, they really do work! There may still be a stigma attached to it, but there shouldn't be. There are real scientific and physical differences in the brain that can make things difficult. But there is help out there for these things! They can be very very manageable with the right help.

doing good! thanks for asking! i just meant that it sounds like your plate is full right now. its not bringing you any joy in its present condition. you might be surprised how much better you feel with it taken down, put away and ready for when you are ready to give it a try again! otherwise, yeah, roll up your sleeves and tackle it!

That doesn’t sound fun. I was in a similar situation recently. Let tank go for awhile had a crash and didn’t have motivation to start it over at that time from algae and aptasia. Was moving and said I’m not giving it up put too much into it so tried again with a new tank and a month I’m going great, added some new coral this week and off to a great start. Sometimes you just gotta restart and try something else to get out what you want

That’s the thing, I can’t find the motivation, I have the buckets in my room, that was a big step, it’s just filling them up with salt

I love the way my tank looks, it’s not really that. It’s literally finding the movitcatikn to do anything reefing related, I sometimes completely forget to feed my tank, that’s how bad it gets 😭

Oh I meant that too, it’s not full at all, that’s the sad part

Fair enough. I know all about that myself sometimes, tbh. How about we start with what you like about reefing and why you started to begin with?

Hey dude, its been a while, hope you've been well! I think we have all been there, at some point or another. If not with our tank then with something else. The best way to move forward is to take that first step. I think you will be surprised at how much motivation comes back once you get some momentum built back up.

Please don't fault me for waxing somewhat philosophical. Newton's first law, summarized: An object at rest will remain at rest, and an object in motion will continue moving. It is the same with people and mentalities. You sir, have let your tank sit at rest, so it wants to remain at rest. You are going to have to put up a lot of effort mentally to get that metaphorical ball rolling again, but once it is, it will be much easier to keep it going. We are all like that, the ADHD mind especially. It is hardwired for dopamine and likes take the path of least resistance. The trick, is to make the path of least resistance the path you want to be on. Find a way to make you cleaning your tank the easiest way to get something else done that you really need done. Good luck dude!

Hey, glad to see you reposting again.

I retired last year, and spent a lot of time without motivation. No sense in beating yourself up for it, try and figure out something you like to do, and do that. If you need to talk with someone, go talk with someone. Sometimes the simplest thing, talking about those with another human can give us perspective and help us get out of these slumps.

But don't give up on yourself or beat yourself up. That's a waste of energy.

IF you need a project, but don't know where to start, I have a laundry basket full that you can come over and run through the machine for me.. THat will be fun!!! I'm going to hang with an old guy this evening, and in a few minutes there is a live broadcast of folks on here. Do something, dont keep score, and talk with others. Life is good, be thankful and ask for help if you need it.

I love the ocean, and the beauty it holds, I wanted to do marine biology, and tanks were a happy and quiet place for me, but I recently switched to wanting to do aero scape instead, but that’s been a thing before I lost motivation

Thanks for this!! Uhhh can I do the laundry over the phone? Does that work?

Your going to college next year. I would just give the livestock away, tear the tank down and store everything or give it away and revisit the hobby later if you want to.
Thing is, idk if I’m dorming or not, and the plan was to gift the tank to my parents, which is what my mom wants, and if I’m tearing it down, I’m not giving everything away, it’s gonna be sold :(
