I really need to know who actually buy these corals at these crazy prices
Don’t want to call any company out
But they get a wild acro, put a name on it and sell a 1 inch numb for 400-1000
I just don’t understand how anyone can buy it

or the new 500 a head blasto

or the 500 a head zoa

how on earth can anyone pay that much

most of the time they aren’t any nicer than most of the 40 corals I see

I can see buying a 800 meat coral. Least you know that can’t be grown out in someone tank and fragged. But any zoa, mushroom . Blasto , sps can

the price stays high only because the people selling it keeps them high and us hobbiest instead of selling it cheap always sell it high

so tell me your thoughts

Most of us just don’t fall for that name game.
That just drives the price up.
In many cases it’s a get what you can for it approach.
$40 dollar frag and $200 in name.

In one store, a 2” forest fire monti is 189.00.
In the second, it’s was $49.

So, why the difference?

Just be picky.

They set the price bc ppl are buying it when they get Reefing Fever (usually a new hobbyists with 1 year in)

I mean, think about it. As a biz you can NOT make much money in profits selling in volume.

There are not enough Reefers in the U.S. to support selling your "product" at volume qtys. There is only about 500,000 to 600,000 Reefers in the U.S.

So they are forced to make profits selling to the one person at huge markups.

Given enough waiting time, some idiot will buy a $1,000 coral that costs less than a $100 in investments.

Same logic can be applied to a biz selling baseball cards for profit. Limited market, limited supply, huge profit on the "I gotta have it" rarity.

You’re not going to. There’s a certain attitude amongst people with more money than they know what to do with. If you’re not in that group then it’s an issue of practicality. 99% of the people that buy a 1,000,000 Bugatti do not "need" it. They get it because they can. Eventually they wreck it or put it away somewhere to look pretty. The only difference between that and coral is that coral propagates, so eventually you’re going to find those crazy frags at normal prices. I just got a 1 1/2 inch Walt Disney frag for $50. Remember when it was $800 for a 1/4 inch?

I like how you crossed out the Coral name but not the website

But yes I get what you're saying. I try to get most designer corals during live sales. Other than that I buy from lfs. All about supply and demand. Would I pay more than 100 for a lil nub of acro? Most likely not. For a colony yes. It also takes time and money to grow out said colonies so I can see why there is such a high markup.

I see why they do it. It’s a business. You need to sell at a price people will pay. Supply and demand.
I just don’t understand why we pay.
yes I guys a hand bag isn’t worth 90k either. But if you want a hermi you will pay that much

Also I didn’t mean to put the web site on the picture didn’t see it ,
That was a mistake didn’t realize the website was on top. This is in no way a shot at tsa. They IMO have one of the nicest corals out there. They really know what they are doing
Just was trying to make a point.

100% some vendors on here mark up prices way too high.
(some prob do deserved to be called out but this company isnt nearly the worst, just look at some of our forum sponsors)
For some of the stuff I would think how long it actually takes to grow out some sps and they might have a low stock of it. Also supply and demand of the certain coral, ie. Walt disney tenuis used to be price at 200-300 and just yesterday saw a frag for $35.

Just for fun though, what are the most expensive corals right now. Obviously holy grail torches, crazy one of a kind meat corals, and the obligatory rainbow splice milli are all some of the highest (and people are consistently buying them). Where are the insanely priced zoas or montis right now? Am i just missing them or are they not trendy rn. Lol that us reefers have these popularity trends in corals is just so funny to me

The only place that really has me jealous is australia though. Watch a LFS tour from parkers reef on youtube and just see how cheap full colonies of euphyllia, scolymia, and acropora are, its literally insane

Lol i just missed the fact that you are also on long island. Where have you been going to get corals? POTO in staten island has a 20, 30, and 40 dollar section in their store where you can get insane deals not available online.

I blame the people who feel a need to name every coral. It's my biggest peeve with the hobby. If we just went by color prices wouldn't be near as bad. Instead it's LMNO's Gary Busey's ****** for $300 a polyp.
