I’m new to the reef hobby and trying to plan my stocking carefully. I currently have one 10-gallon QT with a pair of clownfish that I’m planning to treat with copper following the Reef2Reef quarantine guide.

I’d really like to stick with just one quarantine tank if it’s practical, but I’m struggling to figure out the best strategy. I also want to minimize the risk of introducing fish diseases or coral pests without making the stocking process of fish and coral unnecessarily slow.

If you were in my position, would you:
  • Prioritize quarantining fish and only dip/inspect corals?
  • Use the same QT for fish and corals (at different times)?
  • Quarantine both with observation only?
  • Or is a separate coral QT really the only approach that makes sense?

I’d love to hear what experienced reefers would recommend for someone just starting out.

I would qt the fish and dip and Inspect coral. Just making sure you wouldn’t use copper for coral right. If you dip inspect and change frag plug that’s easiest for coral that’s what I do. Do as much quarantining as you can. If you can go full copper and prazi then do it. If you can only do observation then watch carefully

Do you have a DT setup?

Corals do not need QT just dip if you don’t want hitch hikers. Corals are only to be fallow for 60 days.

Fish copper power or safe at 2.25ppm min to 2.5ppm max for 30 days. Two prazi dosing 8 days apart, and observe for two weeks.

Now which one is first is up to you.

I personally did my fish first during my crazy fight with ich. I actually gave all my corals Away to a buddy of mine after I did a 60 day fallow period with them, and bleached my 150 system. During this time I put together a new 300g system. So I QT’ed a bunch of fish in a 60 breeder, then I moved them to my 150 for observation for 40 days or so if I’m recalling correctly. Then in the 300g system once it was cycled which was about a week.

I personally never Qt'd coral. Dip and acclimate is what I do!
