Could I cover my tank with glass to reduce evaporation?

The thing glass sold at Home Depot reduces light transmission by less than 10%. Non issue.

I clean my glass lids much, much less often than I clean the aquarium glass. Perhaps once a month, if I remember.

While I admit that this is a small tank (18" cube) which makes it easy to accommodate in terms of changing tops and or maneuvering glass top, I do use a glass top during the winter months to reduce evaporation and to keep the heater from being on more than it needs to. I do not do this for my larger tanks as the glass tops would be a little dangerous IMO.
So glass top for winter months then I change over to the mesh from spring to late fall. I also do not find that I need to clean the glass top of salt creep. It condensates water droplets but not salt crust.
