Good day everyone! I'm currently designing my 240 gallon FOWLR's sump and plumbing and I'm wondering if there's any benefit to having a cryptic fuge? It will absolutely have a lit fuge (macroalge) for nutrient control and I have a plan to add a Cryptic fug IF there's a benefit. My concept for the CF is to take off a small line from the main overflow and have it dump directly into small glass tank that's shaded from any light sources with the appropriate substrate and inverts. The small tank would then overflow into the main sump. All in for $100 if there's a benefit.

From my understanding, in a reef tank, CFs benefit as they provide a breeding ground for beneficial organisms which in turn become food for your livestock. The CF also helps remove detritus with the help of certain organisms. With a fowlr consisting of predators, angles, tangs, etc. Is there a benefit.

Thoughts??

I think a lot of reefers anecdotally believe that cryptic 'fuges are beneficial, though I'm not sure that's been "proven" yet.

@Subsea runs a cryptic sponge 'fuge I believe.

I agree! I really think its an area fun to tinker with which has a potential upside for a reef tank. A fowlr is more about developing a viable nutrient export strategy
