Sump size if I add a display Refugium

Hi Everyone,
If you've read some of my posts I'm currently finishing my basement and looking to install an 8' long FOWLR, somewhere in the 230-300 gallon range. I'm planning to build my own sump which will contain a reefmat, skimmer, Cryptic Fuge, and OTO at a minimum. I can get new 75 gallon tanks locally for a pretty good deal and was thinking I could use these for both the sump (w/o the OTO reservoir) and the display fuge. The display fuge will be used to export nutrients as well as provide a food supply for tangs and angles. The display fuge would also connect to the main display tank's sump, ultimately increasing its capacity.

Thoughts?
 
It’s a good plan. I have seen it done several different ways. The most important thing is to do an electric failure test and determine no overflow of water on floor.

I plan on having an acrylic catch containment under the sump (then entire area on the bottom of the stand) with a beadle (moisture sensor) that way if anything over flows its contained. Another possibility is to put the cryptic fuge into its own tank and plumb it over. Regardless, thanks for your comment :)

As stated above, you do need enough residual filtration system capacity to hold all water drained from the display in a power outage, or return pump(s) shutdown/failure!

You can use an aquarium volume calculator to work out how many gallons of water your display tank will drain before the water line drops below the bottom of the weir teeth, to give you a baseline (minus overflow box, and plumbing capacity)

The easy way around this is shooting for 25% of display volume as dead minimum sump volume… preferably, a sump closer to 33%+ display size!
